Homeless in a travelodge - any tips???

Mooovingonout · 10/12/2022 07:27

Anyone have any advice?

Currently staying in a travelodge as my landlord sold the house and we couldn't find anywhere else to rent.

Any tips to make this whole ordeal better???

The hotel floor we're on stinks of weed. Constant doors opening at night and running in halls. Kids are asleep and oblivious thankfully

Thank your lucky stars your not in the hotel where someone I know is staying! They have not got the heating on its colder inside than it is outside! I had to end up taking them a heater!

Oh piss off with your lucky stars. How nice does that feel, probably typing from the comfort of your own home. Dick.

I don't know what to say to encourage you. I think you're being immensely brave, even if you can't get your head around the fact that you are homeless. Did the landlord sell from under you? I wouldn't cope if it happened to me. Really, but for the grace of god. I'd offer to help but I don't live in England any more. I wish you and your family the best of luck for the future.
A merry Christmas and the best of luck in the new year.

I know it's not great but think of the positives like the Free Heating at this time of year too, have it as hot as you like! Enjoy super long hot showers for all instead of sink washes to save on the gas bill, hopefully you have a bath too so nice long hot soaks for all instead of like us all sharing the same bath water at home. Free cleaner on hand to hoover etc and nice clean sheets and towels will save you a bit of money on laundry. Hand-wash clothes and dry on the radiator. Also the tea, coffee and biscuits are a bonus.

I think @Donnaslayer 's suggestions/outlook is really good @Mooovingonout . Even if there's not much cleaning at all (they seem to have given up on a lot of it in Travelodge rooms until guests move out) and maybe not a bath, the heating is a definite bonus. And the tea etc if they're letting you have it.

When I was in a hostel, as it was in a different area I had a wander out there to buy coffee and ended up with some exotic Arabic coffee or something. So having a mooch down the nearest shop even just to pick up a couple of essentials makes a nice change from staring at the walls if you feel able.

@Stewball01 Oh I'm sure you would. Don't get me wrong (I've been there) it is hard but mostly a waiting game in the UK if the people are considered eligible for social housing.

I find a lot of difficult things in life are just a matter of waiting them out, riding them out. And that was before I got into religion- anything like that which people have would probably be a real help.

She has a point though, there are far rougher places to be staying/placed- I know. There are also better ones and hopefully OP'll get something better ASAP.

I think rents have probably peaked right now. I would consider adding your ds’s salary into the equation.

Could you afford to pay rent without your ds? I’m not talking about what you need to be earning to pass credit checks but actual affordability. If you’ve been paying rent on time for a decent chunk of time before your ds moves out and keep the house in order, the ll will probably be ok to keep you on as tenants even if you were to fail credit checks. It is very expensive these days to change tenancies. Also if labour gets in, they may ban no fault evictions, so it is unlikely the ll would be able to kick you out before you proved you couldn’t pay.

A Ninja multi cooker, you can cook just about everything from toasties to a full meal in one & a mini fridge. Get some cheap either paper or plastic pots & cheap cutlery, buy everything ready chopped like onions & veg, sliced bread, cheese slices, some cuppa soups, instant hot chocolate. Don't bank on the council getting back to you next week, most councils are working on a skeleton staff over Christmas.

Nat6999 · 24/12/2022 05:11

Sorry just seen you can't have any cooking equipment, what about pork pies, sausage rolls, cooked meats etc Are you near a supermarket that does hot food like cooked chickens? Morrisons do takeaway hot food, they do lots of different things you could get, Asda are doing a child eats free when you buy an adult meal in their cafe.

About the weed, complain to management. No one is allowed to smoke inside or even vape, surely they can clearly smell which room its coming from to know who is doing it x

I know it isn’t great to be homeless but my first thoughts when I read the op was lucky op to have free heating and a bathroom warm enough to take a shower.
My heating bills this month is nearly twice what I was paying in mortgage payments and for that I can’t take a shower as it is so cold in the bathroom I can’t take my clothes off, ice on the insides of my windows and being freezing cold as we are down to 2 electric radiators. The electric central heating is something like £9 per hour to run

SommerTen · 24/12/2022 22:48

I don't think OP feels very lucky with 6 people crammed into a hotel room!!

SommerTen · 24/12/2022 22:50

OP, I hope that you get somewhere proper for you & your family to live very soon.

timeonmyside · 30/12/2022 17:36

Cheap air fryers are great for chips pies chicken etc. I hope you get somewhere soon it must be a nightmare not knowing when.

Mooovingonout · 16/01/2023 07:18

It must be very hard still being there, OP. I hope the festive season wasn't too awful.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 16/01/2023 11:26

OP, apologies as I haven't read whole thread. You mentioned a disability, do you a specialist housing officer? This may get you up the housing list. Also, does your disability have support groups? For instsmce M.S Society branches can sometimes assist practicall and y fir sufferers.

OldFan · 16/01/2023 12:36

How annoying @Mooovingonout , I hope you at least get a temporary flat soon xx

I have epilepsy, my housing officer doesn't see it as a disability. My seizures are uncontrolled despite numerous medications and I have daily seizures.

Have you actually been to your local council homelessness team? You should have done this as soon as the S21 was issued and they would have checked the legality of the notice and started giving you advice on their process when you’re threatened with homelessness.

Have you had it confirmed that the S21 is valid (does the notice give correct length of notice; have you been given a copy of the latest gas safety inspection - if you have gas at the property; was any deposit equal to no more than 5 weeks rent and was it deposited in one of the regulated schemes within 30 days of tenancy starting; we’re you given a ‘How to Rent’ guide; do you have a copy of the EPC for the property)?

An S21 doesn’t end your tenancy (only you or a court can do this) it is merely notice that your landlord wishes to end the tenancy and, if you have not found somewhere when it expires, then your landlord would have to follow the correct processes and take it through court to get a possession order and then, when that expires, instruct bailiffs to enforce the possession order; you are usually told by your local council not to leave the property until bailiffs are there as you could be found to have made yourself intentionally homeless
and that discharges their responsibility to provide you with housing support (either by way of providing temporary/emergency housing or support to secure another private rental)

You would be better off starting your own thread as your question may get lost as this is posted on an old thread.

You need to make your own thread .

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 30/07/2023 10:43

I gave details of what this poster needed to do back in March - never got any acknowledgment. As you say, a thread of their own would be useful as would replying about what process, if any, they’ve been through with their local council!
