How many days is enough for Bruges? What can I do there? I am looking for a quick budget friendly getaway in mid Jan. any recommendations for restaurants/ hotels would very much be appreciated!
Thank you in advance x

With or without kids? Three days. Boozy beer halls, some strolling, a trip on one of the boats. More beer.

We went a few years ago. Very pretty, beautiful old buildings. Nice canal boat rides etc. Stayed in the Hotel Academie which was comfortable and peaceful, and yet in a central location. No idea of the prices now though. We enjoyed it,nice place.

2 days is enough, it’s quite a small city Very lovely though.

viques · 10/12/2022 01:28

Don’t leave trying waffles until your next to last day.

beguinage is an interesting place.

yes to boat trip.

chocolate

mussels

i think there was a lace museum

Pemba · 10/12/2022 01:40

I looked on Booking.com that hotel I mentioned is listed now as Duke's Academie for some reason. Definitely the same place and it is still getting good reviews.

I had forgotten about the waffles! Yes to that, and lots of nice places to eat actually.

I vaguely remember something about a tower, if you climb up you get good views of the ancient square. Think the tower featured in the film 'In Bruges'. Also remember the swans, lots of swans.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 10/12/2022 01:46

Two days max

MarshaMelrose · 10/12/2022 01:53

We got there at 8.30. We were done by 11. It's small.

MarmiteCoriander · 10/12/2022 02:00

DH had a conference in Brussels and we did a day trip to Bruges with the group. It had pretty parts and lots to see- but even being there for maybe 6hrs- I don't feel I missed out a huge amount.

There is always FAR more you can see in any town/city. 2/3 days would let you see the highlights and relax in between. Look on TripAdvisor. There are often itineraries based on how many days you have.

Newbootstoday · 10/12/2022 06:47

Bruges is ok, as others said very compact and touristy.

I’d personally recommend Gent for a couple of days instead. Feels a bit more authentic rather than picture perfect, which Bruges undoubtedly is. Gent is also pretty with a bit more going on in my opinion. We stayed in the ibis right in town and it was really reasonable.

Hidingawaytoday · 10/12/2022 07:03

2 or 3 days is a good amount of time, it's small and there's not much 'big' to do so you could do it in a day but we enjoyed just wandering round getting the feel of the place and enjoying the free samples in the chocolate shops, eating waffles, eating mussels, having a beer (lots of places do little tastings of local beers) etc. Canal boat trip, fries museum, the tower on the square, tin tin museum. There's loads of things to keep you occupied. I loved Bruge!

Reluctantadult · 10/12/2022 07:06

What the others said!

dontknowwhatisbest · 10/12/2022 07:11

Definitely go to Ghent instead! We had a fabulous break there earlier this year.

PilatesPeach · 10/12/2022 07:26

Last time I went, there was a C&A 😃

Inmyownlittlecorner · 10/12/2022 07:37

I love Bruges, it’s one of my favourite places! We’ve stayed in the Novotel which is central & has (chargeable) parking.
The frites museum & the choco museum are fun & cheap, my favourite place to eat is Brasserie Cambrinus, it’s well priced but gets very busy so book in advance if eating at popular times.

mondaytosunday · 10/12/2022 07:40

We went this summer. Two nights is enough. It's lovely. We spent 8 hours there - a walking tour, lunch then just mooching around and would have happily spent another few hours there but that would be enough. Definitely a guided walk to get the best out of it and a boat tour!

ChristmasJoysuckers · 10/12/2022 07:41

@MarshaMelrose

What do you mean by done? I stop there on the way to somewhere else and have been maybe 6 times now, we don't have that long to spend there but still not done it

Oblomov22 · 10/12/2022 08:10

We liked Bruges a lot. Really nice. I think 2 days is enough because it's small. Climb the stairs of the tower. Wander down by river. Nice.

carbedup · 10/12/2022 08:39

Thank you all! This is very helpful and I've just booked my trip based on your wonderful recommendations! I've booked 3 nights as I just really need a change of scenery and a rest. Thank you all x

Love Bruges. Two days is enough. Watch the film In Bruges before you go! It’s a fairytale sort of place.

We went into tourist information. They told us places to see. By 11, we'd seen them and cruised on the canal. We had to spend the rest of the day there so wandered round to some churches. Nothing worth seeing. We had chips and mayonnaise on the big seating square thing. Dodged the rain. Looked in shops. But I could have done those things anywhere.
It's a pretty place but 6 days?! Hecky thump.
