Do you use all the various programs available on your dishwasher / washing machine etc?

Chatting with some friends the other day and mentioned that the "low iron" setting on the washing machine really did work and was definitely worth using. Much astonishment that I used anything other than the standard setting, and even more incredulity when I admitted I also use different settings on the dishwasher depending on what I put in it.

Am I the only one? :D

All appliances baffle me these days, my dishwasher I use two different settings, washing machine 3 of the choices, and my new tumble dryer I've found 1 I can cope with. I'm definitely not in control.

TeaAndStrumpets · 09/12/2022 16:37

I remember complaing that our new super duper dishwasher didn't do as good a job as the old one. DH reminded me that the old one had been permanently set to Intense Wash, due to a jammed button.

StillWeRise · 09/12/2022 16:44

what's this about a cleaning cycle for the dishwasher???? I never heard of that before, is that a thing???
90% of the time we use the eco setting on the DW once a day, unless house is full and we might do a quick cycle in the middle of the day
WM, we used to use the 'daily quick' cycle nearly all the time but at a low temp, then I heard that the eco cycle saves more energy despite being much longer, so I use that most of the time now- exceptions being an occasional wool wash or I do a quick 60 deg wash for tea towels and dischcloths
microwave- pretty much on or off, really

The rest of the family is allowed to use only one programme on the washing machine. I put my foot down after one to many of my lovely tops was stuffed in at 60 degrees 'cottons' with their stuff. They are allowed to use the 30 degree short programme only. I use about half a dozen different ones.

No dishwasher, not unless you count DH Grin

Blueberrywitch · 09/12/2022 16:52

Sometimes I use “outdoors” when washing shoes but I’m not at all sure if this is the right setting 😅

CoffeandTiaMaria · 09/12/2022 17:03

I deliberately went for appliances that did the minimum of programmes/only ones that I have ever needed or used. That applies to the dishwasher, washing machine, cooker and microwave.

Liz1tummypain · 09/12/2022 17:07

I use a rinse for about 2 or 3 days if its just me and hubby eating , taking out saucepans and cutlery and cleaning them after each rinse. Then use the 2 hours 15 mins ,basic cycle for the real wash,

ThreeRingCircus · 09/12/2022 17:09

Washing machine: 3 modes. Default is 40c wash for 50 mins and I use that most of the time. Hand wash setting for delicates and the occasional hot wash for towels and bedding.

Dishwasher: 2 modes. Eco almost all the time but if stuff is really dirty I may use the intense option.

Microwave: I literally just press the +30seconds button until I reach the time I need. I've never used any other option on it.

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 09/12/2022 17:13

I use normal 30 or 60
A quick 40
Extra spin
Pre wash (for dh work stuff that's filthy)

No dishwasher

Tumble 1 setting.

CharityShopChic · 09/12/2022 17:16

Only ever use the eco setting or the rapid 45 minute setting in the dishwasher - the other settings are a super long one to soak pots and a glasses only wash.

Washing machine I used a few - mostly the "mixed load" wash but on an eco setting, and usually lower the temp a bit too. Don't ever use the wool cycle, or the 90 cycle, or the allergy (?) cycle.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 09/12/2022 17:18

I use one programme only on the dishwasher and reduce the time on the programme by pressing a button taking it down from over three hours to just over one hour. Always.

On the washer I use one programme for general wash on 30 degrees and a woollen programme for delicates. Those two only.
I sometimes handwash woollies in the sink to save time when I have several loads and then rinse in the machine.
Works for me

Goatinthegarden · 09/12/2022 17:19

I’m a bit wild when it comes to the washing machine. I use almost all the settings and different detergents for wool, sweaty gym clothes, outdoor gear, normal clothes, etc.

When it comes to the dishwasher, I just use the same tablets and the eco setting every time.

Athenen0ctua · 09/12/2022 17:21

I only use the cottons setting at 30, or the wool setting at 30 on my washing machine, and often the extra spin.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 09/12/2022 17:23

One or two settings on each for washing clothes or dishes.

My oven has about a brazilian strange settings, like 'heat from the top only' which I ignore. I have no idea what exotic dishes I might make if only I read the manual. 😁

GratefulCheddar · 09/12/2022 17:24

I use 40 degree eco wash and sometimes the wool wash on my dishwasher I use just the standard normal setting.

Oblomov22 · 09/12/2022 17:25

1 programme on dishwasher.
2 on washing machine. 40 or 60.

Probablymagrat · 09/12/2022 17:27

Pretty much everything is washed at 30 degrees 30 minutes cycle, seem to be clean enough. Dish washer is very basic, I use the short cycle mainly. Again seems fine.

comfortablyfrumpy · 09/12/2022 17:42

No. Very predictable. Always the same dishwasher setting andI think I only use 2 of the many available on my washing machine...
..

TheKitchenWitch · 09/12/2022 19:40

Oven! I forgot oven! Yes, I use all the settings there too. I adore my oven.

I used to always use the AUTO setting on the dishwasher, but then I realised that it did a much better job when I changed it depending on what was in it.

I think detecting colour and material would be difficult for a washing machine, but it should be able to detect cleanliness of water after the pre-wash, that's how the dishwasher auto setting works.

That said now washing machines have apps etc (!) it would be cool if you could take a picture of your washing basket/laundry load before it went in and it would auto detect the colours that way.

When I said cleaning cycle I just mean the hottest cycle plus press any buttons like "intense" "hygiene" etc and stick one of those cleaning tablets or the bottle with the wax seal that melts - those work well to clean out the machine and it's good for it to put some hot water through, works wonders for the drain/filter etc.
