Teacher Christmas presents

DD is in Y2. I blinked first when they were looking for volunteers to collect money for the teacher gifts and got stuck with it. I had promises that several people would 'get their thinking caps on' bloody radio silence now though 😑
What do I buy? I have £250 and need to buy for 3 people

Teacher - male, 30ish, beardy, geeky type
TA1 - male, 25ish, looks like he does fitness stuff
TA2 - female, 25ish, I don't know anything about her

I've seen teacher bundles on www.fatbrownie.co.uk

Everything is escalating. When my dc started at school, people just gave the teachers cards at Christmas. Presents were for the end of the school year to thank them. Then some people started giving chocs, which escalated to wine from a few flash Harrys, and now that my youngest is in year 6 I’ve received a demand for ‘a suggested amount of £10 each’ from the class rep.

I replied on the WhatsApp to say I’ll be opting out as I don’t like this sort of escalation. A couple of people did a thumbs up on my comment. The rep then sent out a list of names of those who’d contributed to ‘check she’d got it right’. Christmas gift shaming. What next.

But in answer to your question, vouchers are probably safest. Anything but Amazon though. Give the money to a company who pay their taxes. Or Etsy, supporting small businesses.

I've never bought a teacher a gift, or donated.
They're doing a job that they're paid to do, like millions of other people.

@MrsThimbles £250 divided between a class of 15 - 20 ? at a prep school. Is about £12-15 contribution to the 3 class teachers per child.

It's hard to buy 3 good gifts for that money individually it's much better to do a collection and get something worthwhile.

It’s the equivalent of 20 pounds where I live but things are a wee bit more expensive here than the UK.

I know from what was bought this year as well as a few conversations I overheard at my grandchildren sports day that people here seem to like doing there own thing with regards to things. Although I did hear 3 of the mums talking about the present they’d bought together.

This is quite a transactional view of human relationships.

We don't do a suggested donation amount for ours, we don't keep track of who has or hasn't donated, the gift is just from the class.
I've had donations between £5 and £30.

As a teacher I'd definitely say vouchers.

I don't drink either, so avoid alcohol unless you know the staff you're buying for will drink it.

Amazon is a safe option or you can get vouchers which allow you to spend in a multitude of shops. You can buy them from Asda or online.

geraniumsandsunshine · 09/12/2022 10:15

£50 for each TA and £150 for the teacher

Take £10 off each to buy a card and some chocolates
Then £40 Voucher for each TA. And £140 for the teacher.

Much appreciated!

ifonly4 · 09/12/2022 10:28

All mentioned before, but wine, chocolates and vouchers. With so much, what about a box of chocolates for the the staff behind the scenes, office, MDSs?

Yeah we do that. Each class puts £15 from their collection towards gifts for all non-teaching staff.
