I was walking past a charity collector and was sort of ambushed. By that I mean she blocked my way and rattled her bucket before me. I had to explain that I do not carry cash normally so had nothing to put in her bucket. The last time I emptied my purse out I gave it to a homeless young person near to where I live.

The charity collector was very indignant and told me she never went without cash in her purse. I got used to no cash during Covid. I also do online shopping for food and anything else I need. She cannot have been more than 10/15 years older than me but she made me feel embarrassed. Is it an old school thing?

The only time I have cash now is if I know I HAVE to pay in cash and will go to an ATM.

How many of you also do not carry cash or not a lot of cash anymore?

I always carry and pay with cash, hardly ever pay with card. I'm convinced that card details can be copied and sold to criminals, then where would we be.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 09/12/2022 12:03

I have an emergency tenner.

RosettaStormer · 09/12/2022 12:04

I just don’t use it at all anymore . Took euros on holiday to Greece and came back with nearly all of it.

HairyMcLarie · 09/12/2022 12:13

I've lived in NZ for 7 years and never used cash. I have no idea what the cash looks like. Had to pay for a thing in coins a month ago and had to do that thing where you peer at each coin individually as I had no idea what each coin meant.

Girasoli · 09/12/2022 12:13

I usually have a few £ for church collections/church biscuits/school wants a £ for home clothes day

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 09/12/2022 12:14

I rarely have cash. Don't even carry a purse. Just my contactless.

One of dds clubs is cash only £6 so i draw £10 that day once a week. That's it.

You'd claim it back off the bank.

Compared to cash that can err, get stolen with no recompense.

I like to have money for small purchases from the grocer, butcher etc. If you spend 2 Quid and use your card, they are still charged a flat fee.

Like others here, I like to have some coins for trolleys and parking meters etc.

xogossipgirlxo · 09/12/2022 13:07

I have some odd coins in the car and wallet for shopping trolley or paying for air at petrol station. I am aiming to use more cash though, as it annoys me they try to force on us card payments everywhere.

I stopped carrying cash but on a couple of occasions have needed it so I now just keep a £20 in my phone case which I forget is there till it’s needed . I also though wouldn’t have had change for a charity bucket

I was going to say exactly the same as you. Emergency twenty in the phone case. Sorry no coins for anything else usually.

Blueyismylife · 09/12/2022 13:15

Very rarely. Had to get some cash out the other day for school Christmas fair and now I'm stuck with £10 in my purse lol

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 09/12/2022 13:18

I carry cash because my mum saves pound coins for the kids and we usually end up buying stuff for them with cards or transferring the equilivent to their accounts. Usually have at least 5 pound coins and 20 pounds in notes at all times as does dh.

Also my inlaws give cash at the drop of hat.

BamBamBilla · 09/12/2022 13:26

I live in quite a rural area so usually pass some farmhouse with some fruits, vegetables or eggs on the side of the road with an honesty box so I always have some coins in the car for that or a trolley coin. But I don't carry cash when walking around I rarely even take my card. Just use Google Pay now as there's no spending limit.

'I don't carry cash' doesn't work anymore, they carry bloody card readers with them these days.

And OF COURSE I'm going to pay using a card reader the security of which I have no idea about and presented to me in the street by someone standing there who isn't going to be there next time I walk past, aren't I?

theemmadilemma · 09/12/2022 13:31

Oh do they carry card readers now? I wondered when that would happen. Because hardly anyone must carry cash now.

I take phone and keys and that's it. The Big Issue man today made me wonder if they could start taking card payments somehow.

britneyisfree · 09/12/2022 13:31

Whenever I see money in my husband's wallet I demand half. Other than that never

I was in London the other week and The Big Issue sellers had card readers, as did one of the buskers I was watching.

VeryQuaintIrene · 09/12/2022 13:38

I love cash.

OnlyTheBravest · 09/12/2022 13:43

About £25 - £20 in notes £5 in change. It feels wrong to pickup my purse and not feel the jiggle of coins.

LubaLuca · 09/12/2022 13:53

I have £50 in notes and about £10 in coins. I sometimes have none, depends where I've been and what I'm planning to do. I'm not particularly for or against using cash, it serves a purpose.

Sartre · 09/12/2022 13:57

I haven’t carried cash for about seven years now, since I started using Apple Pay. I only ever have cash if I’m going somewhere cash only which is few and far between but does happen- Christmas fair at school for example.

summer788 · 09/12/2022 14:11

I use Apple Pay but always have cash on me too ! Cash is king I don't shop in places that only accept card

Snoken · 09/12/2022 15:15

I’m not in the uk but always carry £50 equivalent in my purse, it’s been there for almost a year. Just in case.

Deathraystare · 09/12/2022 15:16

Me at the moment because I have still not received my bank card that was stolen on 19th November!!! Thanks for striking Post Office!!!!
