Books for a newish 11 year old reader

DS is an excellent reader. He's very much of the opinion that he's 'completed' reading. He can read really well, so why would he need to keep doing it? (I know)

However, since starting Yr7 in September, it seems that they have to do some reading every day as part of their form time. I suspect that he's secretly beginning to enjoy this time. You have to take your own book in and we've pretty much exhausted our small collection (no point particularly buying that many books previously as would absolutely remain unread!)

I'm very keen to quietly keep the reading going (I LOVE reading) so thought if I could get a few fantastic books for Christmas it might just keep him gently ticking along.

Any ideas, what are your boys absolute most favourite books?

My son is slightly younger but some of his favourites recently have been Harry Potter, Magnus chase, diary of a wimpy kid (he has loves these for ever), Alex rider, Phillipa Gregory's order of darkness series. He has also really enjoyed some books from school called 'my story' about historical events.

You can try some non fiction with him too - Horrible Histories are fun if they still sell them.

Ds at that age liked Phillip Pullman, Michael murpungo, Anthony Horowitz

DD's school has a similar scheme and they allow non-fiction as well.

To be honest, before you spend money, could you take him to the library and he could have a look what he thinks he likes?

DD's reading style changed dramatically when she was 12, I think there was no chance I could get books she may enjoy without her input. We struggled as she doesn't like fantasy and lots of that age range is fantasy based.

She also started on some of our books, cosy or historic murder mysteries were a big hit.

Middle School series and Tom Gates series. I think both are similar to Wimpy Kid!
Wonder by RJ Palaccio. DS may have seen the film which may (or may not!) make it a more attractive option! There is also a sequel, but can't remember the name.
The London Eye Mystery, by Siobhan O'Dowd.
The Anthony Horowitz Alex Rider books.
The Jamie Johnson football books, if he likes football. Again, he may have seen the TV series.
Would also look at graphic novels, as these are often good at drawing reluctant readers in. At my school, the Tintin and Alex Rider ones are popular.
