Did you have a hiccupy baby?

Mine was hiccupy in the womb and has continued to be a hiccupy baby! She’s eight weeks now and the hiccups often set off a cycle of hiccup-spit up-eat again and make it difficult for her to sleep. When did the hiccups go away or get better? GP said it just takes time, but wondering when they might go?

I remember feeling them a lot when I was pregnant and he did it a lot when he was newborn. I can't quite remember but I don't think he was many months old when it got less. He's 10 months now and they sont happen often at all now.

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 08/12/2022 11:35

Thank you! Hoping it’s a bit sooner than ten months as they interrupt her sleeping!

Omg my tummy was jumping all the time when he had hiccups! Not my second baby. Oddly enough it's my daughter (17) now who tends to get hiccups, my son only as the average person.

Erm, teenager sorry.

Knockon · 08/12/2022 12:43

Yes! And if we make her laugh too much, it sets off the hiccups! We’re nearly out of the reflux stage though!

NameOchangeO1 · 08/12/2022 12:45

My 16 yo still gets hiccups daily. Seem to be triggered by eating gluten.

Summertime16 · 08/12/2022 12:45

yes and at 15 she still hiccups. Would wake up as a baby hiccupping, I knew she was awake. Now I don't even hear it

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 08/12/2022 17:19

@Knockon how old is baby?

Yes. DD was extremely bad in the womb and she also had them once born, eventually they stopped, or much less frequent, at least. She actually hiccuped a few weeks ago and it took me back and I realised it had been so long since she had last done it (she's 1.5y now).
We took her to a cranial osteopath around 12 weeks and they asked if she hiccuped a lot as she had a lot of tightness around her diaphragm and tummy area.

Tumbleweed101 · 08/12/2022 18:07

Hippcups in the womb and in young babies I'd heard was to help strengthen the diaphragm, to help breathing and prevent reflux etc.

Mine all hippcupped in the womb but I can't remember after that how often.

Fluffygreenslippers · 08/12/2022 18:11

My baby hiccuped loads during the womb. He also hiccuped a lot as a newborn, but he’s now 6 months old & hiccuping a lot less. I’d say once a fortnight as opposed to every other day!

Catdaft · 08/12/2022 18:11

My little girl gets them often and she's 10 months. She is a nightmare for parting with wind though

CrazyEgg · 08/12/2022 18:12

Hiccups went away when the ‘little one’ gave up the bottle…! In hindsight we should have tried different types of bottles and teats, in case it helped.

SpangoDweller · 08/12/2022 18:13

Yes - mine hiccuped on a near daily
basis in the womb and is now a very hiccupy child 😂

DinosApple · 08/12/2022 18:18

DD1 was the same. Hiccuping through pregnancy, hiccupy baby, hiccupy toddler.

Whenever she giggled she'd start herself hiccuping up until about 6 or 7.
She's 13 now and no more hiccupy than her sister.

MintyVinty · 08/12/2022 18:23

Yes, she's 11 now and she still gets them if she belly laughs 😃

Knockon · 10/12/2022 21:41

11 months now.. she can still throw up like a fountain when she’s unwell, but the reflux is gone for all intents and purposes.. to auch an extent I cut up a few muslins for rags the other day!!

Magnalux · 10/12/2022 22:22

Yip DD now aged 10 still gets hiccups when she laughs!!

DaisyChristmasBauble · 10/12/2022 22:26

Yes mine was very hiccupy in the womb and I’d say for maybe the first 4 months after she was born? Maybe less. The hiccups always made her spit up too! She had reflux though, not sure if they are connected.

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/12/2022 22:27

Mine is still very hiccupy at 3, nearly every time she properly laughs she gets them and she laughs a lot.

I remember it when it I was pregnant so clearly, I used to sit in meetings with my hand over the top of my bump as it jumped up and down in a disconcerting way 😂

Hasn't happened with this one yet but I’m waiting…

BertieBotts · 10/12/2022 22:27

Yes DS2 was like this! He had wet lung when he was born and they even blamed that on the hiccups Confused apparently sometimes it can cause them to aspirate amniotic fluid instead of swallowing it.

He does still get hiccups more than average (he's 4 now) but it's not constant and doesn't wake him up at night any more. I have videos of him hiccupping as a newborn Grin they must have stopped being so frequent by a few weeks old.

Roserunner · 10/12/2022 22:32

DD used to hiccup loads in the womb and she still does now 13 yrs later!! I don't remember her doing it a lot as a newborn tho, or not to any extent it effected her feeding. Hopefully he grows out of it soon.

Roserunner · 10/12/2022 22:33

Sorry she!

H1Drangea · 10/12/2022 22:35

DS used to hiccup a lot as a baby
I lived in Wales then , and apparently it means they’re growing
He did grow , a lot
