Tailors chalk or something

I'm making a small quilt for a friend and using a dark, patterned fabric. I need to mark out the lines for the quilting and am looking at tailors chalk...

Can anyone experienced recommend one that will apply easily, show up and brush off easily?

Or is there something better than those-in-the-know use nowadays??

User a chalk pencil, it's easier

Some people will recommend friction pens that disappear when ironed, but if the quilt gets cold enough the lines will reappear as it doesn't actually go, it's just heat/cold activated.

I have a standard square, same as my granny had, probably from John Lewis. Also some fancier pencils but they are hard to sharpen and break easily.

@zurala

But what sort?? There're so many options!

One like a normal pencil or one with stringy bits?

I haven't made anything like this since I was at school and think I just used normal pencil then, which won't work on the fabric I've got.

My Ukrainian guest is a seamstress.

She uses a sliver of soap with a sharp edge in the same way as I've always used tailor's chalk.

There are water soluble (disappearing) fabric pens, you can get them in blue and also white to show up on dark fabrics. They are like felt tips and disappear when dabbed lightly with a damp cloth. These are more precise than chalk and don't brush off.

If you would still prefer chalk then I'd get an propelling chalk pencil which work with chalk cartridge sticks. They are easy to use and obviously they don't need sharpening which the chalk pencils you linked would.

The brand I use is Prym Aqua soluble fabric markers.

Thanks all!

I shall try the soap trick first as it'll save me from buying more stuff but then I'll have a look at your recommendations :)
