I know nothing. For beginner teens but
they are doing textiles at school!

I have no idea of the difference...

Which sewing machine?!

Late to this thread. Relieved you opted for the Brother over the JL (Janome) because the Brother has a drop in bobbin.

Yes you have made a small error. Bobbins are specific to brand. Take the Janome bobbins back for a refund. Buy some Brother bobbins.

There is a right and a wrong way to load a bobbin. As you look at the filled bobbin the thread should hang down to the left like a P think P is perfect and you will never load it the wrong way round.

Moon thread comes on spools of 1000m. Its ok for a serger but a bit hairy for a sewing machine and won’t fit the machine’s spool peg well. A quality all purpose thread is Gutermann.

lastly your machine has a low ankle for snap on feet. Additional feet will be easy to find on line .

OK so will take back janome bobbins when they arrive and order brother ones! They have them on amazon so will do that!

I've got gutteman thread I think - only got 3 colours as was a few quid each.

Feet. Do I need another foot!? JL had a zipper foot and seam foot but I think they were janome. Will it be okay with the foot it has to begin with?

My Janome has a drop in bobbin but I agree buy the correct brand for the machine.

OK so ordered brother ones. (Amazon - hope they're genuine! Hobbycraft/my local shop don't have brother specific ones.)

I really appreciate all of mumsnet today. Thankyou all. I don't have family to ask these questions of and it's much appreciated 😊

Your machine will come with a basic collection of presser feet.
You'll probably have a standard zigzag foot, on the machine itself, which you'll use for most sewing. Then in a tool box you'll get a screwdriver, a spare needle or two, a zip foot, a buttonhole foot and perhaps a narrow hem foot, or maybe one to stitch buttons on with. That's what my brother machine came with and it's pretty much everything you need to get going.

I've had a brother sewing machine since the mid-1980s. I make most of my own clothes. I get it serviced every now & again & it's still going strong.

Beginner sewists don't need much fancy stuff: forwards, backwards, a range of zig-zag stitches, and an automatic button-holer. Not the fancy embroidery stuff or computerised stuff.

Thanks Easter. It's the very entry level model - but I'm so excited for them and xmas day now!

Just to point out and not wishing to confuse, the basic machine will have a Four step buttonhole foot not automatic. The L14 makes fab button holes, easier than my machine with the automatic which gets temperamental. Good quality thread is always key. Decent needles too. If a machine seems to be playing up. Check bobbin, rethread upper thread, replace needle. Generally one of these will be the issue. Happy sewing.

Thanks Pugs. I've got the good thread and right bobbins now!

Just going to get some material for practicing on 😁
