DC was 10 prescribed phenoxymethylpenicillin tablets but can't swallow them without choking. They've now been given the oral solution but have thrown up /spat out the last 3 doses. Tried mixing with different things but nothing seems to work.

Sorry to hijack - those that have been prescribed yellow amoxicillin liquid, how long is the course? My DD has only been prescribed 5 days which seems very short.

BushraSalem · 20/12/2022 13:50

Mine was only prescribed only 5 days worth of antibiotics and was told it was enough!

Bemyclementine · 20/12/2022 16:29

Ds had the penicillin tablets, 10 days worth.

I had 10 days of penicillin for DS. Liquid form.

We did chocolate milk which seems to help

onmywayamarillo · 20/12/2022 17:04

We had amoxicillin in giant tablet form
But I mixed it with cadburys flake ice cream 😬
They where easy to open and sprinkle over and mix in

My son has autism and has recently had the same prescription so I feel your pain.

I got tablets and crushed them in the minimum amount of water possible they tasted awful but were in such little water (1ml) he couldnt spit them out or vomit and gave him a massive drink afterwards (pepsi) which is something he isnt usually allowed.

In the past I have also reversed when they were given and woke him up in the night given him the medicine and let him go back to sleep. That was slightly less dramatic than doing it in the day time. Obviously make sure he is awake enough to swallow safely.

You could also suggest that santa will get an extra special present for him for taking them and by Christmas day and just write on one of the gift cards it was for taking his medicine so well

I remember a presentation from a children's community nurse who had done research on this that drinking from a sports bottle helped wash the tablet down better than drinking from a cup/glass.

If you grind it up and mix it with undiluted squash, it’s basically the same as the solution.

Or you can try orange juice as it hides the flavour.
