Border Force strike

Just heard about the Border Force strike.
We'll be OK leaving UK for our Xmas break, but coming home might be a problem.
Then again, I'm not sure I want to come back to UK because of the mess it's in - & the weather !

Can you afford to not be able to get back home easily, both financially and commitment-wise?

determinedtomakethiswork · 07/12/2022 18:22

Won't you be affected by the baggage handlers on the way? I'm travelling on the 17th and the baggage handlers will be striking at Heathrow. Coming back border control will be striking. I have been really really looking forward to this break and now I'm really not.

Does anyone know how much domestic flights will be impacted?

Hesleepswiththefishes · 08/12/2022 21:22

Gutted for my 18 yr old on gap
year who has saved for a trip due to fly out just after Christmas, does he go and get stuck at airport or try to reschedule for before strike and miss Christmas with us

@Hesleepswiththefishes I'm sorry about your child. But I reserve most of my sympathy for those who haven't had a pay rise for ten years. With inflation running at 11%, rises in energy, food and housing costs? Everything is going up in price. Except for the cost of their labour. That's why they are striking.

fairs fair. No rises when inflation is about 1 to 2%. Is ok. When it's in double figures? No. Not reasonable to deny them a rise. To offer them 2%? Insult

Good for them, I say. This country is an utter shit show, and the government needs to be held accountable for those who tirelessly work to serve the public.

Does it mean that the border will actually close and no one admitted via the affected airports?? Sods law I fly out on 24th and back 31st Dec

Zanatdy · 09/12/2022 18:21

There will be big queues, and quite frankly it’s dangerous as cover won’t have the same training as a trained immigration officer. So don’t expect them to process arrivals at anywhere near the same speed as they will be extra cautious having not worked the border before or not very often. Don’t pre book a taxi, allow plenty of extra time

ghislaine · 09/12/2022 18:21

There are always staff who don’t strike. I would imagine the queues are going to be very long if you don’t have a biometric passport.

No they have cover but obviously not all staff who do it daily, most will be covering and not as confident so a lot slower

Last time I came through Manchester we used some weird glass.cubicle that scanned our passport. No human touched our passport - are they still doing that?
