So I’m hoping to retire early (early 40s atm!). What age would you 1) like to retire 2) think you’ll be able to retire? Is 50 too early 🤣

My parents were also a brilliant example. They did so much during retirement. Volunteer work, local politics, amazing holidays, playing bowls, DF even went back to uni and did a degree. Like a pp it was only ill health in their 80s and then the pandemic that curtailed their activities.

Sounds amazing! Both your parents and the previous examples support how important it is to have things to keep you engaged in the world.

Realistically, can't see it happening until I'm 70. If my employers will still have me and not manage me out for a younger model.

We are 50 now and still have 10 years left on the mortgage. My hours and pension took a real hit and I am still part time due to caring responsibilities.

I'd retire tomorrow if I had the money. DH has worked for 32 years now at the same place and would also like a break.

Retirement, what's that? 😂

I don't think I'll ever retire at the rate things are going.

I retired at 58, dh still works. My days are busy, never bored and I don't regret it at all.

Id love to retire at 55 and then do part time work and charity work. But pension. So i guess i will keep going but wind my hours back.

I have no plans to retire.
I am 60 and I love what I do.
I am self employed, my work is part "hobby", I will carry on working as long as I can.
Luckily I work from home and the work is not physically demanding, I enjoy the cash, so no plans at present.
OH has no plans to retire either. There are two people in his team in their 70s.

Kidsandcat · 08/12/2022 06:52

Likely 67 as our pensions are pretty rubbish and mortgage finishes then. However may downsize and go part time earlier than that.

ShadowPuppets · 08/12/2022 06:54

I’m currently 33, DH is 36. We’re aiming for 60 and 63 but that depends on a lot of things working out how we’d like! DCs will be 29 and 27 then - I’ve had them earlier than a lot of my friends (comparatively - v early 30s as opposed to late 30s) so I’m hoping that works in our favour.

I retired from full time work at 60, due to redundancy, plus I got my pittance from the government. I can’t remember how much it was then, but over 10 years later its around £90 a week. I had occupational pensions, but not enough to live on. Part time work was the answer, and I had several jobs, gave up at 64 when DH could claim his state pension. He then carried on part time til his employer closed down.

We are not well off retirees, but we still feel lucky to be able to do what we enjoy. He has a hobby that costs very little, I helped out a bit with grandchildren, and have an active life, I volunteer, go to exercise classes, meet friends. We managed a few holidays, short breaks etc. The secret is to try and keep healthy, and do what you enjoy within your means.

elastamum · 08/12/2022 07:30

I retired at 57 because my high pressure job was really impacting my health. I now volunteer as a trustee for a local charity and am fitter than I have been for years. Am very lucky as I could afford to stop working.

Fifty is a perfect age to retire providing you don't have any financial worries. I retired early and absolutely love the freedom of just arsing around.

I’m on track for mid 50’s. I can’t wait. There’s so much I want to do other than work. I certainly can’t imagine being bored!

I retired at 55…never been bored! It’s wonderful!
