First toddler hair cut - questions and photos!

I think I need go get a haircut for my 2.5 year old DS but as it will be first haircut and first child I have some questions!

  1. can I go to any normal hair salon or do I need to find one that specifies children's haircuts? Based in London.

  2. my son has curly hair, but it's growing a bit too long and hard to keep tidy. If we trim it, will his curls disappear? I've attached two photos. One showing his curls 6 months ago, and the other now that his hair had grown longer. Just wondering!

  3. he's a fidgety boy- should I just cut his hair myself or would this be a disaster? Any tips either way?

Thank you!

So not cut the hair yourself. It is not as easy as it looks, trust me!! I tried to trim my daughters hair in lockdown just a straight line round the bottom. It was so wonky!
I would imagine you can take him anywhere- most salons do child haircuts. If he has curly hair I would recommend a salon as they are more likely to cut with scissors where as a barbers may do a cut with clippers. Just my experience.

Oh and unless they are baby curls then no, the curls won’t disappear if that is what his hair type is. If any toy will make it more curly as it will be lighter and healthier.

Be very careful which hairdresser you use - they often don’t understand curly, short hair and cut it very short (as it obviously springs up a lot when cut). I’d be tempted to cut it myself. Stand behind him to trim his fringe. Curls shouldn’t disappear.

Go to a hairdresser you’d trust with your own hair (especially if it’s curly too). They’ll almost certainly have a kids pricing system, and a booster cushion/similar in a cupboard.

Special kids salons are good because the people there are used to dealing with kids and cut their hair really quickly, and usually offer sweets or stickers afterwards. Some places will even provide a "first haircut" certificate put a lock of their hair in a special envelope as a memento 😂 So for a first haircut experience that's quite nice.

But most normal salons will do kids if you call in advance and check.

Cute curls by the way!

I took my son somewhere with a children's 'car' seat, as I knew it was my best chance of getting him to sit still 😂He was younger though, probably under 2.

He did lose his curls as they were just baby curls - his hair is much thicker now he's older and is wavy/straight. Yours looks very curly so won't lose it just by cutting (the same as yours doesn't lose its curl).
