When did your DS's feet stop growing?

DS is (just) 13 and needs new shoes. He's currently wearing an old pair of DH's and he has hiking boots that still fit him. Trying to decide if I should wait until after the cold weather and tell him he has to wear his boots/DH's old shoes until then. Will only be a problem if his PE teacher decides they need to do sport outside as DH's aren't trainers. Don't particularly want so spend a small fortune on trainers now if they're unlikely to fit him in March!

I’d probably buy him a cheap pair of trainers from decathlon for PE - just house brand ones.

Around 18 but growth was slower. Look on local FB groups eBay for Preloved ones

Blanketpolicy · 07/12/2022 08:18

Around 17 he stopped at a nice petite size 12 😱

SheWoreYellow · 07/12/2022 08:18

Boys stop growing later than girls, don’t they? I think you need to buy him new trainers, unless you really can’t afford to.

TheDishElopedwiththeSpoon · 07/12/2022 08:19

Decathon’s cheapest running shoes is men’s sizes are 13quid. There basic stuff tends to be totally serviceable for people who don’t need it to last a long time - which sounds perfect for your situation.

MistyRock · 07/12/2022 08:20

I feel a bit sad that all he has is his dad's old shoes or hiking boots. Is this purely a money issue?

Remaker · 07/12/2022 08:20

My DS is almost 15 and feet are still growing. I’m confused by the question though - he needs trainers? Doesn’t he wear trainers for casual wear as well as PE? I never care about buying trainers as they are the shoes that get the most wear.

gogohmm · 07/12/2022 08:26

Basic trainers are under £15 in many places, opt for them for now. My DD's feet grew until 16

At 13 you've still got years of growing for a boy. Girls often stop growing in their early teens but boys not until late teens or early 20s.

My 15 year old son's feet are definitely still growing. Obviously they need new shoes each time they go up a size but not expensive ones!

ChristmasTidyings · 07/12/2022 08:30

@MistyRock I have been asking him since September to let me know when his shoes are starting to get too small. He told me two days ago they are now so small his feet hurt and he doesn't want to wear them any more... I raided the shoe cupboard and found some DH doesn't wear any more. He needs waterproof shoes (I usually get goretex ones) so they're not cheap.

He would like to have snow boots for winter, but I can't justify the cost when they wont fit a second year. His main motivation is so that he doesn't have to tie laces, he wore hiking boots last winter with minor grumbling.

Bind his feet? Have him adopted?
Seriously buy your dc a pair of shoes!
My ds was a size 12 at 14...
He didn't ask to need regular shoes.
Having dc in the first place accounts for that.

ChristmasTidyings · 07/12/2022 09:59

@Remaker yes, usually he lives in trainers in autumn but in boots in the winter.

@Sprouttreesareamazing I'm trying to judge what size to get, slightly too large considering he's unlikely to wear them often until March? He's already a 46 😩with very strange shaped feet and hard to find shoes that fit.

My son wears a size 7, I've bought him 2 pairs of Puma trainers in an 8. They are fine and will last until next year. He's 14 years old.

MistyRock · 07/12/2022 10:26

I think 7 is 40.5 and 8 is 42.

underneaththeash · 07/12/2022 11:08

My DS’s feet stopped growing at 16 - but he went through puberty earlyish. I think you’ve a few years to go.

spiderlight · 07/12/2022 11:17

Mine is 15 and his feet have slowed right down - he's currently in an 11 and I can't see him going beyond a 12. He's on his third pair of these, which are cheap and cheerful as trainers go and can be waterproofed. He has the same ones in plain black for school as well.
