Heavy Periods, Obesity and Menopause

I have name changed as I find admitting to obesity excruciating. Even though it's obvious.

I have seen a gynaecologist about my heavy periods.I've been on HRT for 4 years but for the last year I have had flooding periods during my break from Utrogestan.
I tried the Mirena coil but it came out with my first period! Tranexamic acid does nothing, ibuprofen also nothing.
The gynaecologist said to me...'you won't like what I'm about to say but it's your weight'
I'm 17 stones.

Is it? Do all menopausal fat girls flood?

I'm now at a loss. GP gave me Provera so. I could " have a break"
I can't stay on it forever I assume.

The only answer I see is coming off HRT and hoping my periods have ended. I'm 51.

Or will weight loss specifically help?

I’m 51 in a couple of weeks time and weigh 18 1/2 stone. Am going down the exploratory route to HRT at the moment as have some unpleasant menopausal symptoms. I don’t flood when I do have a period - in fact, they’re lighter than they were in my 30’s & 40’s. Like so many things
for women, if they can blame it on our weight,
they will

warofthemonstertrucks · 07/12/2022 07:24

I'm not obese, 42 and I have lawful flooding periods-for the last 6 months. Hitherto ive never had any issues with my periods. The acid did nothing for me either, now exploring other options with GP.

It isn't necessarily your weight. That's just an easy answer from the Dr.

EBearhug · 07/12/2022 08:19

I'm 50. My periods were heavy and flooding at 16.5st. I'm now about 13.5st, and they are lighter - but also much more irregular. So I don't know if it's the weight loss or just time and the progression of peri.

Thanks, no pattern then.

I'm at a complete loss.

I can't see any point to trying another Mirena.

I think it's age. I was 9 stone at 49 and had terrible flooding, close shaves at work a few times. Then I was on back to back progesterone, no break. That sorted it out thankfully. I refused the coil. I can't cope with the thoughts of it. Ask for a back to back mini pill.

Barelyable · 03/04/2023 21:53

@xPaz may I ask what dose of progesterone you are on? I have the same issue as the OP and although I'm overweight at 11st 11lbs, it's not too bad as I'm tall.
My doc has put me on 200mg every day and I'm still getting a period but it's only been two months. Did it take a while to settle?

xPaz · 03/04/2023 21:58

I was on azalia for 2 years no problems, its a stamdard mini pill, then in January the doc put me hrt so utrogestan 100 mg
Which is a higher dose. Would prefer to be on the lower dose but I suppose the gp knows best.

Stripycatz · 03/04/2023 22:03

Why are you having a break from utrogestan if you've been on HRT for 4 years? What's the longest time you've been without a period?
I think it's absolute fattist crap to tell you flooding is due to your weight, it's a primary symptom of menopause! Get a second opinion.

JaneFondue · 03/04/2023 22:04

I am not obese and flood too. It's so awful, isn't it? Why can't anyone figure out our insides?

Stripycatz · 03/04/2023 22:09

Sorry, my post has come across much more shouty than I intended. I'm just so furious about women's gynecological health care provision and how utterly shit it is.
I hope you get some answers soon 💐

JaneFondue · 03/04/2023 22:11

It really is. Utter crap.

gabsdot45 · 03/04/2023 22:11

Rubbish. As soon as a patient is overweight that's always the first problem.
14 months ago I weighed 19 stone and was sailing through the menopause.
I had weight loss surgery, lost 7 stone. Am a healthy weight now, and I've started bleeding again, high blood pressure, urinary tract infections.
Nothing to do with your weight.

lljkk · 04/04/2023 07:30

You could only know if it's your weight if you lost weight & the periods went lighter. Losing weight sounds impossible for you so what's the point in wondering... I'd be asking how long you could stay on hormones/Provera.

DustyLee123 · 04/04/2023 07:33

Haven’t i read that the more fat you have, the more oestrogen you have, which is why we put on weight in menopause, so there could be something in it.
