Starting to panic. I have anxiety and am on medication for it. I have ocd too which obviously causes intrusive thoughts.

All I'm seeing is news and threads about strep A. I have a nearly 10 week old baby and year 3 at home. I'm getting to the point of not wanting my primary school dc to go into school anymore...

A few weeks ago year 3 dc came home with another virus, he's been hacking away since but otherwise fine in himself. I caught this virus, had a headache for a couple of days, a dry throat and a very slight cough and am fine now. My partner caught the same thing and got a sore throat and white spots on the back of his tongue/tonsils (this is not unusual for him, he nearly always seems to get tonsillitis) but now I'm thinking was it strep throat ?! It started about a week - 10 days ago.

Baby has been fine, no fever, was off her milk after having her first set of jabs. But she has rosy cheeks and that's what's worrying me thinking has she caught this thing that was possibly strep?
Partner is better now, throat only very slightly sore now. Now I'm thinking what if baby has caught it and just isn't showing anything yet... Would she be showing more symptoms if it was that ? I thought maybe she could be starting to teeth early as she is knawing her hands a lot and starting to produce dribble/bubbles. She's happy in herself.

The media have alot to answer for, I know I'm being ott but I'm just so worried atm.

It’s ‘just’ scarlet fever.

It’s also just one of the horrific facts of life that we try our best to ignore, sometimes children die from diseases we consider ‘harmless’.

Children can die from chickenpox, common colds, flu, anything in the UK.

But your children will most likely be absolutely fine. And really there is no way of you avoiding them catching anything at all that won’t massively impact on their quality of life. You’ll drive yourself mad thinking of every what if.

What you can do arm yourself with knowledge of what to do.

Keep an eye out for the symptoms. I believe GP’s are going to be more proactive with prescribing antibiotics for now to be on the safe side, so push for those if you spot the scarlet fever symptoms.

It's natural surely to worry as she mum of 3 small DC?
With so little time left I would be considering pulling DC out a little early, esp in year 3..
Depends on other people and how they are exposed.

@Tinseltosser thank you. I've worried myself as I've seen that rosy cheeks can be one of the signs of scarlet fever.

I'm glad I read this. I didn't realise strep A was scarlet fever. It did the rounds at DS's nursery many moons ago. He didn't get it. My main worry at the time was that we visited family miles away and if he'd been incubating he could have started another outbreak. Didn't happen.

Packed lunch, the only one worrying?
You aren't, there is loads of parents who are "worried" / " concerned".
Looks at the threads, it's all over news.

Or do you mean the only person considering taking their child out early?

Again this close to Xmas I'm sure lots of people are doing it.

No I meant pulling dc out early. I'm sure every parent of young dc is worrying. As you said, it's everywhere. I saw the news this morning with one of those 'cases in your area' articles and thought fucks sake are we back in peak Covid ?!

I posted these statistics from the govt website on another thread.

The invasive and dangerous type of strep A accounts for just 2.3 cases per 100,000 children. While that's a increase, it's still a TINY number. Please don't let the media frenzy affect you negatively

In very rare occasions, the bacteria can get into the bloodstream and cause an illness called invasive Group A strep (iGAS). While still uncommon, there has been an increase in invasive Group A strep cases this year, particularly in children under 10. There were 2.3 cases per 100,000 children aged 1 to 4 compared to an average of 0.5 in the pre-pandemic seasons (2017 to 2019) and 1.1 cases per 100,000 children aged 5 to 9 compared to the pre-pandemic average of 0.3 (2017 to 2019) at the same time of the year.
