What’s the best self help book you’ve ever read?

And what is the main thing you got from it? I know that’s a broad question, just thinking about it after I saw a book recommended on another thread. Have you read anything you feel legitimately changed your life for the better?

Life lessons by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler. It's the one I've gone back to time and time again, it puts everything in perspective and I find it comforting.

Newcatbrowntail · 06/12/2022 19:35

Mumsnet has been brilliant for me

Ivyblu · 06/12/2022 19:36

Lurking for a recommendation! I've only read the 1st Vex King book. Got the 2nd one on the way.

It's a good read, definitely not life changing though!

The Bitch Rules by Elizabeth Wurtzel. Don't be put off by the crass title; this book is full of nuggets of wisdom.

HuntingoftheSnark · 06/12/2022 19:55

Alcoholics Anonymous - "the Big Book".

horseymum · 06/12/2022 19:56

Probably not the answer you're looking for - the Bible. Main take away - we don't need to do it all ourselves. ( That's a bit of a simple summary)

How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. Dale Carnegie
A bit old-fashioned, but the advise is timeless and I love the examples and stories used to illustrate the recommendations

flapjackfairy · 06/12/2022 20:03

@ snoodle 1
I was coming on to say the exact same thing. I am a Christian so the bible first and foremost but Dale Carnegie's book is invaluable to me and I keep it with me always. So much wisdom !

Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway.

It had a HUGE impact on me about 12 years ago. I was desperate to leave my home town. I was a young single mum, no money and no prospects. I wanted to go to University in a city a few hours away, so decided to move.

That book really helped me to see through my excuses, look at why and how, and just do it.

Buteverythingsfine · 06/12/2022 20:08

My two faves are here already,Feel the Fear and Stop Worrying and Start Living. I've reread them at least once a decade for the past three decades.

IsItMimi · 06/12/2022 20:08

The Choice by Edith Eger. She is a holocaust survivor who became a therapist. Most amazing book

norwichmummy123 · 06/12/2022 20:10

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne changed my life

Withholdingvitalinfo · 06/12/2022 20:10

The best books I have read that have helped me are fiction. I just happened to read them at the right time in my life.

the one that will always stick with me is The Cleft by Doris Lessing which I read when DS was a baby. A wild baby.

Something deep inside resonated.

Getting things done - the art of stress free productivity

Not the catchiest title but some really good tips

glamourousindierockandroll · 06/12/2022 20:16

He's Just Not That Into You was helpful when I was online dating as it stopped me taking things so personally, and making excuses for lacklustre effort on my potential date's part.

Beaucielblues · 06/12/2022 20:17

Transurfing Reality by Vadim Zealand. Learning the art of 'reducing importance ' has changed my life.

Defiantlynot41 · 06/12/2022 20:20

Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goldman ( or Taming your gremlin/how to get out of your own way by Rick Carson for a simplified version)

How to do the work by Nicole La Pera

Anything by Brene Brown

If your job involves leading others, Radical Candor by Kim Scott. Not only a brilliant approach but also actual practical steps you can take

superdupernova · 06/12/2022 20:41

The unexpected joy of being sober... for obvious reasons. It was easier to read than a lot of the other quit lit books and actually made an impression on me.

EscapeTheCastle · 06/12/2022 20:44

Stop Thinking Start Living by Richard Carlson

I also find the You Tube videos by School of Life very, very useful. They do books too. One sentence from School of Life can bring me out of a fog!

Easy Way to Quit Smoking by Allen Carr. 2 packs most days - not all - to zero. It helps that he says you should smoke while reading it.

Ah yes, I totally forgot about this one!

I read it in August 2010 and quit smoking that week. I’ve not had a ciggie since.

Too Good to leave, too Bad to stay

Split with my ex, who I’d been with for 5 years, 2 weeks later.

Best thing I ever did. Absolutely life changing book.

theoldhasgone · 06/12/2022 22:25

Reinventing Your Life by Janet S. Klosko and Jeffrey Young. It is based on schema therapy and identifying the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and others. Absolutely brilliant and I have read a lot of self-help.

Also a very committed Christian but find the Bible a bit vague on the 'how to' if you are really struggling with your mental health.

Games People Play by Eric Berne. Brilliant for helping to understand dysfunctional relationships and why you can't seem to do anything right in some relationships. Bit old now but lots of helpful insights and very accessible.
