Dust then hoover OR hoover then dust?

I've dusted then hoovered my entire life.... My friend says I am doing it wrong? How can that be so - I dust and the dust falls and I hoover it up. It makes complete sense. She thinks hoovering brings up dust and you have to dust after hoovering. I think I'm right though...

You are 100% correct.

Thank you! The world makes sense again.

Dust then vacuum, your friend needs to change her vacuum air filter or cheap vacuum cleaner. Meile cat and dog all the way!

FourTeaFallOut · 06/12/2022 17:42

Dust then hoover. Or, if you have a duster attachment, hoover the dust then hoover the floor.

Deadringer · 06/12/2022 17:43

I always dust then hoover but I read somewhere that you should hoover first, can't remember why. I don't dust often so sometimes have balls of dust fall from blinds etc that need to be hoovered up so will keep doing it my way.

OwlBasket · 06/12/2022 17:44

She was right back in the day when hoovers didn’t have good filters. You’re right now though.

but. Dry dusting is daft IMO. Just sends most of the dust into the air to be fall again (apart from what’s randomly sucking into the hoover). Damp dusting followed by hoovering should be the law

OwlBasket · 06/12/2022 17:46

Yy big buildups of dust should be attacked with the hoover before damp dusting

Mybrotherssistersmothersdaughter · 06/12/2022 17:48

I do damp dust what is easy to do - but on top of wardrobes etc or down to skirting boards I use an extended duster thingy. So that is dry dusted. Sometimes the dust is interesting!

Dust and then hoover. If you do it the other way round, then all you are doing is making the floor dirty again.

MyCousinWasOscarNominated · 06/12/2022 17:52

Dust first then hoover up the dust then dust up the hoover dust then hoover up the dusted hoover dust.

FFS your friend needs to get a life.

chercez · 06/12/2022 17:53

Dust then hoover.

DialsMavis · 06/12/2022 17:54

My granny was in service in big houses from age of 14 (late 1920s) & always said you clean from the top ...so I would always dust them vacuum.

But she would be disgusted by the amount of dusting that actually goes on in this house.

havemybreakfastthen · 06/12/2022 17:55

You're right and she's wrong. Simple 🤷‍♀️

Mybrotherssistersmothersdaughter · 06/12/2022 17:56

I'm the one who needs to get a life - I made a mumsnet thread about it 😂- interesting about the filter though - that makes sense, I remember dusty old hoovers when I was a kid. Thanks for the answers!

Dust then Hoover same as you. I can't say I've ever noticed my place being dusty afterwards...your friend maybe needs a new Hoover

watcherintherye · 06/12/2022 18:01

Hoovering is dusting as far as I’m concerned! What’s the point of sweeping all the dust into the air? It won’t automatically land on the floor to be hoovered up. It’ll just re-settle on the surfaces. Doesn’t every hoover have a dusting attachment?

WednesdayFridayAddams · 06/12/2022 18:06

I’m with your friend. Hoover then dust.
I damp dust so it isn’t going to fall on the floor anyway. It’s just habit as, years ago, DM said it has to be that way round so the hoover doesn’t throw dust up on your clean surfaces. This was back in the days of a big noisy hoover model with a massive cloth bag to empty though.
