How much pocket money?

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 15:22

My DD and DS (14 and 16) are complaining and saying they should have more pocket money. If you have children about this age, how much do you give them?

Half their age, i.e. the 14 year old gets £7 and the 16 gets £8... and they get a "pay rise" every year... simples

dementedpixie · 06/12/2022 15:29

Think mine get £25 per month
They don't spend much

Woohoomoo · 06/12/2022 15:29

£10 per month into their Go Henry accounts. Age 11 and 8

Mine got their age in euros each month so no rivalry.
Youngest just turned 18 so now she gets more but buys her own lunches etc.

Mine get £25 a month each in their rooster accounts, 10 year old twins

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 06/12/2022 15:36

£32 per month (he's 16) and I pay his phone contract, supply all clothes, toiletries and books. I also pay for any school stationery, trips, CCF, piano lessons, climbing wall sessions, cinema tickets etc. He saves pretty much all his money - probably because I do fund most extras for him. Any misuse of money - vapes, cigarettes, drugs or alcohol - would result in a cessation of his income.

Exactly the same as us.

However it depends on what they are supposed to buy with it. You need a proper budget for them. Sit down and teach them how.

15 she gets £20 a month.

But I also pay for Xbox subscription of £11 she would of got £30 if wasn't for that.

BeaLola · 06/12/2022 15:41

Just turned 15 gets £10 a week - I pay for haircuts, toiletries, school trips etc , fees for hobbies , clothes and phone contract

Comefromaway · 06/12/2022 15:41

I always used the social services rates. They are a minimum weekly amount of pocket money children in care should get to keep them in line with their peers. This is for personal spending only and does not include phone, travel, lunches etc

11 £3.65
12 £3.90
13 £4.65
14 £5.20
15 £5.95
16 £9.35
17+ £10.85

Comefromaway · 06/12/2022 15:44

Sorry, I posted an old list, it should be

11 £4.05
12 £5.15
13 £6.15
14 £7.35
15 £8.80
16 £10.55
17 £12.10

That is less than they currently get. At the moment they both get £15 per week.

11 y7 twins get £20 / month. They meet their mates in town maybe once a month, it doesn't go far.

Cosycover · 06/12/2022 15:58

I think £15 a week is plenty.
Did they say what their friends get?

I give me eldest £40 a month. His ps subscription comes out of this though and I pay for his phone.

Comefromaway · 06/12/2022 15:59

Assuming they don't have to pay for phone, clothes etc then £15 is a LOT.

Violashift · 06/12/2022 16:00

Dd 14 gets £20 a week. She gets a takeaway with her friends on a Friday night so if not for this would be £15.

Is it? It depends what they have to buy with it? It would be one trip to the cinema then its gone.

NoelNoNoel · 06/12/2022 16:02

How about switching to monthly ?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 06/12/2022 16:02

14yo gets £15 a week. If she wants more than that at 16 she will need to get a job.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 06/12/2022 16:04

I think I'm paying to much reading these comments!

My 11 year old gets £10 a week and my 7 year old gets £5 a week.

Comefromaway · 06/12/2022 16:05

But you wouldn't go to the cinema every single week. For mine that would be a once a month thing at most. And round here a cinema ticket is only £7.99 anyway, so you could also cover your bus fayre, sweets from poundland and a drink.

HerRoyalNotness · 06/12/2022 16:05

£1 per year of age a week

Thursa · 06/12/2022 17:32

Mine got £15 a week at that age.

They said all their friends get more. Honest mum. I was sceptical. Seems they are doing okay with pocket money.

£6 a week into GoHenry for a 9 year old. Increased every birthday.

He is expected to buy token gifts at Christmas and Birthdays. Mostly used for spending on days out/trips etc
