What other jobs could I do with a social work degree and experience?

I've been a social worker for nearly 20 years and have a masters degree, but I've lost all the passion I used to have. I would like to retrain as a psychologist or therapist but not sure I can afford too, what other jobs could I look at with my qualifications and experience?

AMPH? Interesting work, shitty hours though.

SafeguardingSocialWorker · 06/12/2022 21:24

I am not recommending any of these but things former social work colleagues have left social work to do instead recently are:

holistic therapies
electrician
Local authority Commissioning
NHS commissioning
school pastoral social worker
working for the local NHS services based in police stations
foodbank manager
University lecturer
full time practice educator for social work students
NHS/ PALS role
sandwich shop worker
detective (police)

If you have DIPSW or equivalent you can convert to probation officer easily (not probation service officer, it's a more senior practitioner role) or you can be a youth offending officer with no conversion

Care inspectorate.
Registered intermediary supporting children through ABE and court?

Well teaching jobs also require teaching experience or even a teaching qualification these days. You may need to retrain

A lady I know who runs baby classes in community centres was once a social worker. She loves the flexibility and freedom her job gives her!

Whatthetrolley · 06/12/2022 23:45

IRO
QA Assessor
Youth Offending Worker/manager
Commissioner
Project Manager

With those number of years, you need to make sure you don't lost your years of service / redundancy protection. Etc.

VanCleefArpels · 06/12/2022 23:48

Probation or civilian police staff

I'm a registered social worker and work for women's aid. I am about to start the practice educator course next week as we regularly have students placed with us. I know other social workers who work as IDVAs and in mental health services.

Following with interest!

I switched and went into Drug and Alcohol work. Good to know what other opportunities are popping up!

Good luck with whichever you choose!

Deedippy · 09/12/2022 07:12

@Cupofteaplease21 are you me? I'm in exactly the same position. Thing is I don't think i want to do anything social work based. It's a tough one. Hope you find a solution

I switched into HR, had to take some quals once I settled but love it

I'm also a social worker looking to make a move. Been a social worker for 20 years but sadly still have another 20 years left working. What qualifications did you do? Was it the CIPD and did you do them before you started applying for HR roles? As HR is something I keep coming back roo. Thanks

I’m a social worker, I moved into a learning and development post with my local authority, no case load, regular working hours and job flexibility. I do that part time and trained as a psychotherapist so have a part time practice self employed, I also do some freelance training. Good mix of using existing skills and knowledge while also gaining new ones and lots of flexibility (and still have LA pension).

That sounds like a dream! What training do you have to do to be a psychotherapist? I'm in fostering at the moment which isn't stressful or too busy.

These are all great suggestions.
Anything like counselling or therapy you need to have had experience in doing it before but how do you get that experience in the first place!!!!

I've been a fostering IRO both for as a permanent post and also done it as in independent over the years. Very flexible so with your experience that could be one to think about
