What is happening in my mouth?! Do I need a dentist? (Sorry for pic!)

I am struggling to eat or drink as the same spot on both side of my mouth, I think it's the gum sort of covering my very back teeth is it wisdom teeth? I've circled where it hurts, anyway it hurts (a lot) in the exact same spot on both sides which seems weird? I thought maybe not brushed that bit well enough and gums have gotten sore but seems odd it's on both sides! I'm very pregnant and have had mo end of teeth problems this pregnancy.

Anyone know much about teeth or do I need to drag myself back to the dentist? I moved away and haven't found an NHS dentist here so I'm doing a 3 hour round trip to the one where I used to live every few bloody weeks lately!

Your wisdom teeth look impacted. Your dentist should make a plan to remove them. I’ve had all 4 of mine removed for same problem.

BungleandGeorge · 06/12/2022 12:51

They do look impacted, although the swelling might be making them looK worse. If you’re a regular at the dentist I’d just give them a call and they might be able to help over the phone

bloodyteethagain · 06/12/2022 12:54

If it's them being impacted what would trigger them both suddenly becoming sore at the exact same time? I'm really baffled by the fact both sides started hurting in the same place at the same time!

I'm not a dentist but I know what it's like to have dental issues in pregnancy. It could be gum disease or an inflamed gum. I'd use corsodyl and see a dentist. I've had four kids and lost a tooth in each pregnancy.

misssunshine4040 · 06/12/2022 12:59

It's called pericoronitis. It's so painful, I have had it so many times over the years due to partial erupted wisdom teeth.
Call your dentist or emergency dental hospital and they will rinse the area and prescribe antibiotics.

misssunshine4040 · 06/12/2022 13:00

Also you can get a bad taste leaking from the area. It's usually a trapped piece of food that's got under the gum flap of where your tooth is failing to come through.
Salt rinse and painkillers and go to the dentist as the pain takes ages to go away

Grampire · 06/12/2022 13:01

That looks like mine when I had pericoronitis. Started off a little tender and sore on a Friday morning so didn't get it seen to - big mistake! By Saturday I was in absolute agony and couldn't get seen over the weekend. Antibiotics sorted it in the end but it was horrendous.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 06/12/2022 13:02

Yep that's wisdom teeth. Mine have taken 10 years to totally erupt they're a nightmare.

Go get some X-rays to check placement.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 06/12/2022 13:04

I'm not a dentist mind they just look exactly like mine did at multiple points.

Mine often hurt at the same time because when one was pushing up it was fighting the other for space in my mouth.

spiderlight · 06/12/2022 13:07

Mine did this during late pregnancy. I blamed the hormones in my body for encouraging them to grow and try to push through. I didn't get round to seeing a dentist (I was in the depths of a house move and then DS arrived early) but it stopped as soon as I'd given birth.

Chillyoptimistic · 06/12/2022 13:08

Looks like pericoronitis when the impacted wisdom tooth gum area gets infected. I had it years ago and ended up with lock jaw. It can be quite serious and needs antibiotics to clear it up

Pecanpie12 · 06/12/2022 13:12

Exactly same as me OP! Wisdom tooth have only half come through. They've recommend me to get them out.

PineappleWilson · 06/12/2022 13:14

It can be food trapped under the gum / on top of those teeth. Try a little baby brush or interdental brush and corsodyl mouthwash or similar but also arrange to get your wisdom teeth out. I had that and it was a day patient hospital appointment as they had to drill them out (less hideous than it sounds).

StellaAndCrow · 06/12/2022 13:17

It might settle down by itself. My wisdom teeth never came through, and every so often they make a bid for freedom, looking exactly like this, then settle down again and I forget about them.

Doing a salt water mouthwash really helps because it takes down swelling - dissolve some salt in warm water and swish it around your mouth for a while. Hope it gets better.

Mossstitch · 06/12/2022 13:25

Depends on your age, mine were like that for years but eventually broke through at 27. Every now and then would have a growth spurt and be sore/hurt. Also have to ensure clean under the gum, if you can try using dental floss or interdental brushes and original corsydol mouthwash and it may settle down. Made me much more sympathetic towards teething babies😩

WilsonMilson · 06/12/2022 13:29

Pericoronitis is right. Salt in warm water rinses will help. Gengigel mouthwash and gel is really helpful. A water flosser will help keep the area clean too.

Candyflosscrochet · 06/12/2022 13:29

Another vote for pericoronitis and a previous fellow sufferer!
Brush the area (even if sore), use corsodyl mouthwash and/or warm salt water and put in some anbesol.
Use a toothpick to hook out any food stuck under the flap to ensure it doesn't get nasty or cause a cavity.
After a few days it should start to feel much better, if not, go to the dentist to make sure it's not infected.
I used to have it regularly, and each time, the flap receded a bit until now it's practically gone so it doesn't inflame anymore.

FrankBKelly90 · 15/12/2022 16:45

You seem to have impacted wisdom teeth. To get them out, your dentist should devise a plan. In addition to rinsing the area and prescribing antibiotics, call your dentist or an emergency dental hospital. I got my teeth cleaned at the start of the second trimester, and a crown and two fillings were put in a short while after that. My dentist made it a point to regularly gauge my level of comfort and would sit me up if they needed to hold off until the anesthetic or another item was ready. Please remember your appointment! When pregnant, good oral hygiene is extremely crucial.

RobinHumphries · 15/12/2022 18:19

They are NOT impacted (really? Several of you need to go back to dental school urgently). Impacted is when they are growing at an angle. Yours are simply partial errupted. As such there is a flap of gum covering the tooth - the operculum. Debris can get trapped under that flap causes an infection - pericoronitis
