If your child has cough variant asthma…

… do you find that every cold or virus comes with a cough that takes weeks to shift?!

we have brown inhaler, blue inhaler and montelukast granules and that combination seemed to be managing his symptoms well (he’s two and a half) he would cough a little at night and with exercise but NOTHING like the chronic cough he had had from feb- June.

three weeks ago he got a nasty virus (we all got it and it’s lasted for ages) and now we are into the fifth week of cough. It doesn’t help that our house is very dusty (I clean like a mad thing and hoover everything) so I’m looking into an air purifier for his room.

but I just wondered if this is normal for CVA and whether the inhalers and montelukast should be having more of an effect on viral coughs? Or whether unfortunately it’s par for the course even with the medications?

I don't know if Seretide is available for kids but it's the only thing that works for me. Montelukast and the brown inhaler made me worse.

My two have seretide 50 inhalers (pale mauve) @wherearethescissors - they are 7 & 10. The 7 year old only just got his - not sure if it’s because that’s the lower age limit.

DS (9) has had inhalers for night coughs from being a toddler. They faded off and we had a few good years where there was a slight flurry of using them after colds or when the weather changed at the end of autumn.

This year, since the hot weather, any gear change in weather has triggered asthma attacks with repeated flurries of stubborn wheezing, but awkwardly not enough effect on his stats to trigger immediate medical help (we've had 3 999 calls and end up being processed through Urgent Care/ GP). He's been put on Montelukast and switched to a symbicort turbohaler. His chest is back to feeling tight in recent days so the blue inhaler is back in action to ease it and prevent it escalating back to wheezing.

It's such a slow process to improve the symptoms and hard work trying to work through the system for timely advice and treatment. We've got a specialist referal in the pipeline so hopefully should be seen in the next 12 months...

@BogRollBOGOF your poor boy. Hope the referral helps. I’m hoping at ours they’ll X-ray his chest and look at his lungs. He never seems to have a problem with oxygen as he’s always bouncing around everywhere even when he’s coughing, never sits still so if he does for any length of time I will know something is wrong.

the steroids seem to have improved things a little so I’m hopeful after the full three day course it will be much better.

am also surprised at how
effective the air purifier is, I’m now thinking of getting one for our bedroom too as I always wake up with a blocked up nose

It's great stuff! Glad to know it's available for some kids at least

It’s been 24 hours since his first dose of steroids and he’s had a second dose since. Im
not really seeing any discernible difference :( he sounds really congested now so I dont
know if the steroids will do anything to improve that. I’m so tired.

he went up at 7 and although he’s asleep he’s probably coughed every ten minutes since he went up.
