Amoxicillin shortages

I was prescribed amoxicillin earlier for my 2 year old who has quite a nasty ear infection. It seems to be out of stock nearly everywhere - I eventually managed to get the last bottle in one pharmacy (of course the furthest one from my house!) having called around 12 pharmacies in the town I live in. Pharmacists were saying not only is it out of stock, they can't even order it as suppliers don't have it. So basically if I hadn't found one left in stock I wouldn't have been able to get it, and would have had to go back to my GP tomorrow to get something different. One pharmacist mentioned this is a national issue.

This seems really worrying to me - it must be one of the most common childhood prescriptions and given how poorly my DS is I would have been really upset to have to wait until tomorrow. Is this because GPs are prescribing more for sore throats as a precaution with all the Strep A concerns? Or another Brexit related issue?

Hope everyone out there with poorly little ones is able to get some, or a good alternative.

multiple of my long term medications havent been available or they havent been available int he doses im meant to take. its partly russia, partly brexit and partly due to lack of staff i think

My DD was given some at the OOH clinic yesterday and I'm v glad not to have had to go pharmacy hopping.

Same here regarding unavailability of some medicines, dosages etc. Very concerning.
Hope your DS feels better soon, OP.

Given that there has just been a statement from the NHS, BBC radio news, that they are not short of stocks I would assume this is the NHS moving immediate stock level into hospitals and once that has been done pharmacists will be able to order again. That happens quite a lot, we just tend not to notice it until it is a med we need.

They prescribed antibiotic ear drops last week and I struggled to get them but didn't really think too much of it. But did seem more odd for amoxicillin to be so hard to get hold of. But hopefully it will be resolved shortly.
