MRI results wait...

Does anyone know roughly how long it takes to get MRI results?

I had an MRI of my small bowel 11 weeks ago, after the MRI the Radiologist said the results would go to my Consultant and I'd hear in around 3 weeks. It's nearly 3 months but I know the NHS is busy, so I don't want to seem pushy.

I spoke with my GP last week about an unrelated issue and she said they don't have access to the results. I don't even know who to ask as I don't have a Consultant/Secretary to contact.

Basically I went into hospital with pain and after a CT scan showed inflammation they said I'd have an appointment for an MRI as an outpatient- and 2 weeks later I received the appointment!

So I've no idea who to contact and no idea if I'm being impatient or 3 months is a normal wait. I'm in pain but not concerned about the results as I'd have surely heard if it was serious.

I've normally got mine within a month. Could you call the MRI department and ask?

SilverSalver · 04/12/2022 21:29

I recently waited 5 months for an mri and the results came 5 weeks later.
I woukd ring the imaging department at the hospital. They will know if it's been reported and who the report was sent to.

Does your discharge paperwork from hospital have any consultant or team mentioned on it? If so, call the hospital and ask to be put through to either X consultant’s secretary or X department’s secretaries (you may find you’re transferred to a random consultant’s secretary but they should be able to look on your hospital records to see who your admitting consultant is)

Constantlyinsecure0 · 04/12/2022 21:45

Thank you, I never thought to call the MRI dept. I may try there but don't want to seem impatient!

@LovedFedAndNoonesDead I wasn't actually admitted as such, I was there 24 hours but spent my time at the Surgical Assessment Unit. So I have no paperwork or notes.

Have you looked on your NHS app for the results?

Constantlyinsecure0 · 04/12/2022 22:04

@Carriemac I've nevwr heard of this app or knew it existed!

All but no point in contacting MRI. Their job is done. The 'radiologist' didn't tell you about your results availability; a radiographer did, the person who did your scan. They (radiography) did your scan from a referral from presumably Gastroenterology. They'll have the results.

fitnessmummy · 04/12/2022 22:13

Please don't wait for them to contact you. Call reception of the place you had the MRI and they can forward you to the right department. May take a few calls but I would chase because your health is too important to worry about you seeming impatient. Good luck

MadeForThis · 04/12/2022 22:31

Call in the morning.

Medical secretary here. I haven't worked in the NHS for a long time but I have been a hospital patient a lot in recent years. Sounds as though your mri result has been overlooked by the department that saw you (?surgical assessment unit, I think you said). I would try to get through to them by phone and if you have no luck, ask to be put through to PALS, who help sort out patient's complaints/queries. My sister ended up asking PALS to help when endless emails and calls failed to get anyone to find her overdue pathology results. PALS can investigate and chase up the medical team involved in your care.

Not true.
I chased mine up by ringing imaging. They were able to see whether it had been reported and who the report went to.

Thank you all. I emailed radiology and she gave the name of the Dr the report had been sent to. I was surprised because he was the Dr who I saw in hospital who had "locum consultant" on his badge. Also, I was told I'd be sent to gastro and he's a general surgeon. Anyway, she couldn't say if 3 months was the normal wait. I googled him but couldn't find him at all. I do work for the NHS, so found his email via the address book but not sure of the protocol with emailing Consultants

Now you know the consultant and his department I’d contact the hospital and ask for his secretary and ask her/him about getting the follow up you were told would be organised and also the scan results

@SilverSalver

I said :

You said

But you didn't get her results, or, rather more pertinently, a diagnosis and a plan, did you? A harried radiographer said, 'Yep, it's been reported, and the results went to your requesting doctor, who is x'.

Then, did you get through to x or their secretary?

cezannesapple · 06/12/2022 22:44

Call your consultant's department. The switchboard will put you through.
