I'm watching Big Bang Theory. They are showing that newborn babies are left in one hospital room all together at night away from their mum. Is that correct? I can't imagine it!

I'd also like to know this! Watching with interest.

My dc was born in the US in the early 00s. I had an emergency Caesarian, and baby was kept in one of those rooms (with a viewing window) for the first night as I recall

I was taken in a wheelchair to see dc. There was a special rocking machine all the babies got a turn in , and all the babies wore hats made of elastic
bandage with a pink or blue ribbon to tie off at the top

It depends. Maternity rooms are usually private and the mother gets to decide if she wants nursery care or "rooming in." I had a c-section with my first so the decision was made for me. My son was brought in for feeding and whenever a visitor was there. My husband slept in my room in a chair that converted to a bed and he did most of the care. My second child was a vaginal birth and she "roomed in," staying in the room with me while my husband and I took care of her.

My three were born in the US, babies were kept in the nursery overnight and brought out to you when they wake up for a feed. They also take all the babies back to the nursery for handover so the nurses coming on see all the babies on the ward, then they bring them out to you to spend all day. Overnight they do all the weights, any bloods etc while they have them. Mine were c-section and I was only in for two days.

very few hospitals do this anymore. Most maternity hospitals have mothers in private rooms with their babies.

I had my ds in Germany 16 years ago and babies were kept in the nursery so mums could sleep. If they woke up then they were taken to mum.

And another question, is it normal for friends and workmates to gather in the wait room when someone they know is in labour?

LittleMy77 · 04/12/2022 17:34

Yep, they were in the ward nursery overnight when I had mine. I was so out of it tho post section, not sure that was the case for everyone

DisneyToDucks · 04/12/2022 17:44

Thank you for answering my question. I honestly can't imagine it. I wanted my boy close to me. But in principle it would be great to get a good night's sleep after birth.

I had many visits to l&d for hyperemesis and spent a lot of time in that waiting room. I heard so many families complaining about how long it was taking. I was horrified. There was no chance I was letting my family wait on me like a watched pot.
