EBay help is buyer trying it on?

I rarely use eBay now as tender to give stuff to local charities. I had an educational book that was £55 pound that I bought new (as second hand was pretty much same price) and read a couple of chapters.

when clearing out for Christmas I decided to put on eBay as it’s immaculate - went for half price bought and buy it now. Second class postage Royal Mail.

within 48h someone asked about edition - then bought it.
I posted it and was warned might be delayed said just basic 2nd class postage at our local office.

5 days later I got message “what’s happened “ book not arrive - replied been sent / strikes hopefully will arrive in next few days.
Been 10d and now they opened case saying not arrived.
I through receipt away as didn’t think it was tracked as 2nd class letter - I have the price payed on my bank statement.

I think the book has been received - I wondered if the buyer saw it and thought it could be resold higher and that it wasn’t recorded post.

does anyone have any opinions?
would it have been tracked if I kept receipt?
have I been scammed?

I am not going to use eBay again as I imagine I and going to loose the £28 (£25 book and £3 postage)

any advice appreciated- thanks in advance

Just keep an eye on their selling page - if they suddenly have one for sale then...

unless you pay for tacked or special, you will still have to refund the prof of posting 1st and 2nd gives you no protection.
That is not true. A certificate of posting, that costs nothing from the post office, will allow you to recover upto £20 from Royal Mail if an item doesn't arrive.

BatshitandBonkers · 04/12/2022 13:02

Someone posted a book to me 10 days ago - 4 of those days have been strike days, and a Sunday (not including today also being a Sunday!) and I’ve not received it.

Same. I had something posted to me 24th November. It is with tracking and it still hasn’t been delivered, other stuff that was just sent in a post box on the same day arrived here ages ago but the tracked item is sitting waiting to be sorted. Just one of those things.

Op just reiterate about the strike, hopefully ebay will give extra time before refunding the buyer.

You have no idea if they received it or not because you couldn’t be bothered to send it by trackable means.

Having a parcel that is signed for by the recipient as proof of receipt is for your benefit.

This is true but good luck with that . The amount of online stuff you have to fill in and just not worth the hassle . Was made aware someone still waiting for help on missing item 12 weeks later and that was before the strikes.

I have sold a few things over the years and nothing has gone missing (suppose I have been lucky).

Also the questions before / after seen a bit quick.

I think I am too trusting and hope people are genuine.
In one of the messages they say never leave the house so definitely hasn’t been a failed delivery.

they have so much feedback on eBay for both buying and selling it is very impressive the amount of stuff they buy and sell on.

I am happy to loose the money just sad that this might be calculated- as it was a book on speech therapy for disability, wish I just handed it in at school

thank you to everyone for help.

I am going to pop to post office tomorrow as my card gives exact date and time to see if they can get receipt copy.

That’s silly reasoning. I never had anything not arrive, until something didn’t. RM is notoriously unreliable, more so at the moment due to strikes. I don’t think you have a leg to stand on here as you didn’t send tracked. You need to refund and move on.

I sell on eBay, I usually use a mixture of RM and couriers, depending on the value of the item and the size of the parcel, but lately I'm just using couriers as I don't trust RM. I use the integrated Packlink service on ebay, so the tracking gets uploaded automatically, and it's easy to claim. RM are a nightmare if an item goes astray as they want receipts of purchase and then will only pay put what you paid for the item, not what you sold it for.

I will happily refund as only low value £25 but don’t think 3working days for second class post is a long time.

Yes its not

I've had two parcels go missing just recently after selling them on Ebay. I genuinely think its the RM shenanigans..EBay recommends not sending stuff through RM so I'm guessing there's been a lot of this.
I'm now using Evri it's just as easy.

I would ask them to wait as the post is delayed.

I posted a parcel (ebay) last Tuesday and it's currently saying that it will be delivered on the 13th. I messaged the buyer (with lots of apologies) and suggested it was being delivered by carrier tortoises. The place it was being sent to was only 50 miles away.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 04/12/2022 19:34

Second class is not tracked and in fact often gets lost because it's so cheap.

Always send tracked. Or else once it's out of your hands is over.

Mykittensmittens · 04/12/2022 19:42

Exactly the same here.

I sold a brand new with labels Italian leather purse for £20 plus standard postage with a choice of additional options at extra charge.

The delivery address was an office block, so I said to the buyer I wasn’t confident this would mean the item ended up with them, but they insisted this was what they wanted. I have the messages discussing this. They insisted I sent it second class.

I did this and obtained proof of posting.

they then insisted the item never arrived.

Long story short despite me having proof they wanted this postage method, and having proof that I despatched the item, eBay said I had to refund them.

i can prove I posted the item
i no longer have the item
i can’t prove they DIDN’T receive the item

i now have no item and no money, and I’m very much down as I also had to cover the postage. For all I know they full well have it.

splatfrog · 04/12/2022 19:45

I seriously doubt it's arrived yet. I went to our local sorting house yesterday and it's packed to the rafters with undelivered mail. I reckon it'll take a good week for my place to get up to date, by which time they'll have another strike....
