Why cant I get well, and stay well?

I had the uber cold in October, not covid but it floored me. Took about 10 days to recover.

Since then I have been struggling. I seem to have constant aches, intermittent sore throats, lethargy and that general "I dont feel right" feeling.

I'll maybe get 2-3 days of feeling okay, to then have another few days of feeling shit and it repeats over and over.

I'm not sleeping well because I feel poorly all the time, work is insane so I'm positively exhausted as well.

I'm taking vitamins, I dont really drink alcohol, I watch caffeine after lunch. I never have a temperature, if anything it's a degree lower than my normal temp.

I really dont want to be poorly for Christmas this year. I'm ALWAYS poorly at Christmas but this year we are hosting a tonne of family and being poorly would be awful.

Your immune system is probably shot from all the lockdowns so now you are coming into contact with bugs they are affecting you more than previously. Add to that a lack of sleep and it's a recipe for disaster. Combat the sleep issues and you will stop being so poorly. What have you tried to do in order to sleep consistently?

I would suggest getting some bloods done. Certain types of Vitamin deficiency can make you feel awful. I was the same, plus continual huge mouth ulcers, diarrhoea, cold feet and it turned out I was deficient in vitamin D and some B vitamins, I am on the way to feeling better.
Always best to see your GP rather than guessing.

I typically have quite good sleep hygiene as I spent years as an insomniac.

I go to bed at a reasonable time, will read for anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. I take the green Nytol tablets and wear earplugs and most of the time I fall asleep relatively easily.

My issue is, I wake up in the night to pee and cant get back to sleep or I just wake up early. I feel like I need to get some extra sleep but my body appears to be programmed to allow no more than 6 hours a night.

In my insomniac days 6 hours would have been a blessing, now it feels like 3 hours too little.

I then wake up feeling awful most mornings. Achey, sore throat, stinging eyes, just dragging myself out of bed feels impossible.

Can you try stopping liquid intake earlier? I have to stop at 10pm or I am also up in the night. If I have have less than seven hours I also end up poorly. I need eight really but I wake after seven and a half. I went on holiday earlier in the year and got eight every night for a week. I have never felt so refreshed!

WonderfulCounsellors · 04/12/2022 08:35

No answer but I am on day 7 of the worse cold I have ever had, it’s not covid. I do think the lockdowns may have to do with our immune systems being shot to bits.

Mumteedum · 04/12/2022 08:47

As someone who got a virus (maybe COVID or maybe not) in 2020 and ended up with mecfs, I would urge you to rest as much as possible. Do not push yourself. If you feel exhausted and Ill, stop. Eat well, get tests if it carries on. Basically listen to your body.

I dont drink anything after 8pm, maybe it's an age thing but I have to pee at least once a night.

I wonder if it is some kind of post viral syndrome.

I had glandular fever in 1999 and it took me 2 years to recover, 5 months of which I spent bed bound.

I'm sat here now feeling exhausted, and tight chested. We just put up the Christmas decorations and I am absolutely wiped now and have a sore throat.

It's so annoying as I'm a busy person!! And this is stopping me being productive.

Anyone know a trick to sleeping more? Would sleeping tablets from a GP do this?

so , don’t be , just do the absolute essential things , delegate as much as possible , go for ‘ that’ll do ‘ rather than perfect

rest and get better
I am exactly where you are , trying and trying to get better
so I have tried to implement the above

fingers crossed it works for both of us

Our family almost never get ill and it sounds boring but I put it down to a low sugar diet full of whole foods and also I often give give the DC probiotics in a powder eg in their cooled porridge . Good gut health seems key to a strong immune system so these things help that.

I take 10mg amiltrytiline and it really helps me sleep. I had Bell’s palsy and just felt awful last year. Terrible headaches, shakiness. It was due to nerve inflammation and I just had everything hardcore antibiotics for Lyme disease, steroids, anti inflammatories. I am feeling much better but have stuck with the amiltryptiline as I struggle with sleep otherwise.
