I’m in childrens A&E with my DS who is 3 days post tonsillectomy and bleeding from his nose. The place is absolutely rammed (assume it’s widespread panic about strep A), and I’m sat near a woman who is coughing and spluttering and has her bask drooping below her nose (not great for a child who is meant to be avoiding germs).

it’s taking all I have not to say something because she’s probably having a shit day too, but waking up to a child whose pain is unmanageable and blood everywhere is no fun.

That sounds tough. Feeling worried makes most of us less tolerant. Deep breaths, your child is in the nest place (albeit chaotic by the sounds of it!) I also imagine you've not had a lot of sleep.

I hope they feel better soon.

muddlinthroughit · 04/12/2022 04:48

Just wanted to send hugs
I wasn't worried about strep a as I have older kids, but just read that a child in yr 8 has died, so now worrying my 14 year olds sore throat is something more

Hope you are seen soon and DS is on the mend x

🖐🏼 Freshly washed & available for the holding of xx

how old is DS?

I had mine out when I was 7. In those days parents couldn't stay, only visit ! Can you imagine that now? I still remember my Mum drawing me (as requested!) a wedding scene for me to colour in.

another great bit was lying on the settee having as much ice cream and as many crisis as I could eat! Mid 1970's recommendation by the Drs!!!!

and getting presents, books, colouring books. Never happened outside of birthdays/Christmas.

tell mask dipping woman to sort her mask out!! She might be having a bad day, but that's no reason to make your/DS's day even worse!!

xx

Thanks. Last time this happened (other child) it was IV abx and a stay in hospital. Wonder whether that will be the same this time.

I was a little worried about him yesterday morning, and phoned the ward who said it wasn’t this issue and suggested a walk in centre, but there was no blood so I kept him at home. Mostly because I didn’t want to expose him to respiratory viruses.

and yes I’m trying to keep my panic down, but it’s rough. I can see some movement on the board but the first waiting room was absolutely packed.

Ragingoverlife · 04/12/2022 04:55

Sat in A and E too. Its absolutely rife with people panicking but understandably so. I hope you and your LO feel better soon.

Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 04:57

Yes I didn’t expect it to be so busy. The poor staff

OP posts:
Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 05:16

Hope you are ok @Ragingoverlife

Ragingoverlife · 04/12/2022 05:24

We're okay. He came in with a temp of 40.4, and slept pretty much all day, now much lower but there'd approx 20 children in the 'queue'at any time. So we're not urgent but still waiting to be seen to check for underlying infection etc.

Tonsillectomy is such a horrible op. People think it's plain sailing but not!

I just want my bed to be honest

Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 05:28

I feel like the threat of a deadly infection plus poor primary care access in general means the children’s ED route is going to be utterly swamped. We are not currently bleeding so medium priority. But tbh probably won’t get very far until shift change. There is 1-2 drs on duty and so many people.

MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 05:28

Here as well. Was in a&e earlier due to my pneumonia but was luckily seen straight away as I suppose they didn’t want me hanging around. That’s also why I’m awake.

I hope you both don’t have too long to wait op & Raging.

Op ask that woman to put her mask on.

Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 05:33

She’s gone. Sat here for 3 hours infecting everyone then had a bit of a strop about the wait (funny - 8 hours doesn’t seem that big a deal if you know your kid really needs to be here). But it’s the triage system, we are triaged but will be seen in order of priority. If other really sick kids come in then it will take forever. What can be done? Not a lot really.

OP posts:
MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 05:36

Well at least she’s gone. Hopefully you don’t have too long. Not forgot the wait with youngest on 22nd December for appendicitis & that was with a GP letter.

Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 05:37

Hope you are feeling ok @MissMarpleRocks - pneumonia is nasty

Remember me (8) & my brother (5) being in hospital & parents could only come At visiting times. Seems so terrible now when you think of it.

Pretty grim but thank you. Had it 4 weeks. 3 lots of antibiotics & now steroids. Burning lungs. Hopefully the steroids will kick in soon 🤞

Perfect excuse for no housework so always a silver lining. Dh & dcs on top of that 😁

Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 05:56

Gosh that sounds horrible. Hope they get you sorted soon.

I saw some space free up on the board but other kids have jumped in there now and we are 30 mins late for our obs.

OP posts:
MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 06:04

Thank you.

🤞🤞 you get in there soon.

Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 08:26

Still nobody has even so much as looked at him and the torture of seeing people leave and yet more poorly babies arrives makes me feel I should have packed for the week!

OP posts:
MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 08:36

Have you asked how much longer it’s likely to be. Is he in pain? Uncomfortable at all? If so I’d stress that.

1234IDeclareAPeanutWar · 04/12/2022 08:42

Is it a continuous bleed, OP?

Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 08:53

No thankfully. Otherwise I would be kicking up merry hell. It’s a slow intermittent ooze

OP posts:
Tonsiltrouble · 04/12/2022 12:11

We are cannulated, awaiting IVs and staying overnight. Staff are lovely, they are just stretched
