Nurses being called Sister & Matron

I can remember many years ago that senior nurses were referred to as sister and matron depending on seniority. When did this change or am I not remembering correctly?

They still are called sister, senior sister and matron in many hospitals - as well as charge nurse

anonymous123a · 04/12/2022 01:04

I'm not sure; I did my training starting in 2006 and they were long gone except the older nurses. I loved being referred to as Nurse Surname, and referring to my Senior as Sister Surname.

What would a senior male nurse be called?

What would a senior male nurse be called?

Deputy or senior charge nurse for sister. Matron is used in our Trust for both sexes.

addictedtotheflats · 04/12/2022 01:31

Im a senior sister and a lot of other staff call me "sister" I also call my Matron "Matron" now and again. Still really common

WetBandits · 04/12/2022 02:19

Still Sister/Charge Nurse in hospitals as well as Matron (male or female) 🙂

In my role in a specialist community setting I’m a Senior Nurse and my line manager is a Clinical Nurse Specialist (my next goal!)

yentirb · 04/12/2022 02:41

Nursing student here and we still have sister and matrons

Rosebud21 · 04/12/2022 07:23

Sister/Senior sister is not the same as matron. Women are also called charge nurse

x2boys · 04/12/2022 14:38

Sister/charge nurse used to be the same grade/ band in the trust I worked for ,they brought back the matron ,aka as " modern matron "in the early 00,s in rea!ity it's just another tier of management.

Jansobieski · 04/12/2022 17:51

in reality it's just another tier of management
@x2boys what's that even mean. Of course it's a layer of management 🙄 They do the stuff the band 7s haven't time to do.

Yorkshiredolls · 04/12/2022 18:00

Its not changed wherever Ive worked, on wards/ICU they are still addressed as Staff Nurse for band 5 qualified nurse, Sister at band 6, Senior Sister band 7, Matron band 8. Charge nurse is interchange title for a male or female “sister” if they prefer. I work under a male Matron at the moment. Theres other sidelines such as clinical nurse Specialist, advance nurse practitioner etc

elderlyhippo · 04/12/2022 18:00

Despite etymology of the word, I've heard both men and women use the job title of 'matron'

Sister is way less common, and might well be ward manager (a term I dislike as it sounds more clerical than clinical, but you do get used to the jargon sense)

ditavonteesed · 04/12/2022 18:05

Nurse is a band 5, sister is a band 6, senior sister band 7 and matron is band 8. Male band 6 or 7 is charge nurse. Usually different uniforms for each.

cptartapp · 04/12/2022 18:07

I work in general practice and am still called sister.

Fedupofdiets · 04/12/2022 18:12

I am a Community Matron so the title is still used, my male colleagues are also Matrons too.

Peoniesandcream · 04/12/2022 18:33

I'm a ward sister, says so on my badge. Senior sister is ward manager, above that is matron

MissyB1 · 04/12/2022 18:36

It hasn’t changed OP.

Londonnight · 04/12/2022 18:40

We have ward sisters and a matron on our ward.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 04/12/2022 18:44

I can remember my dsis laughing her head off when I told her I told her I couldn't understand why my consultant had a nun working with him called Sister Susan (I was 18.... catholic school educated Grin)
Then a few weeks later I had surgery and thought I'd died as I woke up with an actual nun staring into my face in recovery. Don't ever mention you're catholic when filling out the pre op forms! I had to try and recall which church I belonged to and say a prayer (v v lapsed by this point)
I think my dsis set it up Grin

Nurse is a band 5, sister is a band 6, senior sister band 7 and matron is band 8. Male band 6 or 7 is charge nurse. Usually different uniforms for each.

In your trust maybe. In mine the sister is a ward manager, often called a clinical lead, and can be a 6 or 7 depending on the size of the ward. SIL is an ITU nurse and is a band 7 because of her extra experience and training, no sign of management in her role.
