Toddler irritable hip

My son who is 3 has had constant viruses the past couple of months he suffers badly with tonsils. I had him at doctors with concerns of how ill he had been and me being my worrying self had convinced myself he had leukaemia. Doctors weren’t concerned. Fast forward to today he woke up with a limp/dragging his leg. This sent alarm bells ringing as I know this can be another symptom of leukaemia. After hours in hospital 2 doctors have agreed it is irritable hip caused by his most recent infection. He hasn’t had a temp for 10 days but his white blood cells are still slightly high (17) which they are putting down to most recent infection. Luekimia has never been mentioned to me but I asked them about it several times and they have said they really do not think it is as high bloods would have more abnormalities and white blood cells would be much higher or much lower. I’m a total worried with anything medical. Can anyone give some reassurance ?

I dont have any experience re leukaemia but two of mine had irritable hip and it was quite worrying. But it disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived and there were no repeats or any ill effects.

Thank you. I’m hoping his passes soon

My son had this in the 1990s, eventually diagnosed as rheumatic fever. It took a while - he was on bed rest then had to be carried everywhere because he couldn’t bear weight at all. He’s now a 6’ 2” father of two with no health problems.

My DS had this when he was 3. Transient synovitis was the diagnosis at the time - he was the same re recent infections. He wasn’t in any pain with it which I remember thinking was strange.

Referred to paediatric ortho consultant for repeat X-rays. Signed off about 6 months later after 2 lots showed no deterioration in joints. Limp passed after about 3/4 weeks.

Hi he is absolutely fine now! It’s generally was irritable hip and went away pretty quick. He still gets odd virus but a lot better since getting his tonsils removed. I think it is very common. Google is not the best sometimes especially if you suffer health anixety like me

I really do. It’s been 6 weeks he’s been doing it for now so that has me worried that it’s lingering xx

Twice now my daughter (7) has had viral myositis after a bad flu virus and covid. In both cases she had a temp of over 41c for 5 days. She just wakes up once she's feeling better and can't walk (unless on tip toe)because of pain in her calf muscles. It's awful for her becasue she can't verbalise what's wrong (severe SEN). It just vanishes after 3-4 days.

*Also called viral myositis, benign acute childhood myositis is a mild and limited sudden onset condition that causes lower extremity pain during or following a viral illness. Symptoms include a tiptoe gait, muscle pain, or refusal to walk (due to pain) and low extremity pain that resolves in a matter of days. 19 Apr 2022
