ADHD/ADD?

Hi everyone!

I'm on MN daily, I don't post much but I enjoy reading the posts on here. I've been meaning to post about this since June!!!

Basically i did a list in my phone and I was wondering whether this resonates with anyone as signs of ADD/ Autism?or whether it's just nothing... I'm 36, and I'm wondering if I should peruse a diagnosis. I've just felt stupid for the whole of my life, and I'd love to find out that isn't the case!

So, here goes...

  • Feel an annoying ‘pressure’ if nails get too long and have to cut them / bite them.
  • Black and white thinking sometimes
  • Feel stupid a lot
  • Anxious
  • Can read a book to the kids whilst thinking of something else and not remembering reading it to them at all.
  • Jump from task to task
  • Very forgetful
  • If I have to learn something, constantly yawn and feel tired.
  • Dad used to tell me I “didn’t want to learn” whenever he tried to get me to sit down to learn something.
  • My Mum definitely has learning difficulties.
My IQ is low but I’ve had a good job with responsibility (think healthcare)
  • Easily distracted
  • Never invited to parties (as a kid)
I was very shy, and used to get shouted at for daydreaming.
  • Think of other things when people are talking (not with everyone )
  • No filter. People say I’m quite blunt ….
  • Get stressed with organising , planning , packing. Have to write lists and check over and over.
  • In order to learn something I have to write it over and over again for it to go in my head
  • I started writing this list about 6 months ago haha
  • When I'm thinking I often say to myself in my head "ok so now I'm thinking about ..." and then what is it I'm thinking about, sometimes quite a few times,
  • Start things with great enthusiasm diet etc and quickly run out of steam / motivation / forget about whatever it was
  • If I don’t have a plan things don’t get done
  • I only remember things that interest me, my general knowledge is shocking - this makes me feel very stupid.
  • Used to smell my pillow as a kid up until 13/14- used to help comfort me.
⁃	daughter being assessed for autism
⁃	find it overwhelming to tidy the house if people are coming over as it’s always messy and I’m particular, I even dust skirting boards and clean walls! But I find it incredibly stressful.
⁃	If I don’t know how to do something I just won’t do it
⁃	Take too long to make decisions / but also impulsive

can be impulsive when driving.
Got married two years ago and still ha haven't changed my surname

  • If I do housework I will be loading the dishwasher and then remember I haven't watered the plants, so I stop to go and do that instead of finishing the dishwasher.

I could go on.

Hiya - I get what you mean in this post but I think you really need to reword it; it's quite offensive to people with ADHD that you basically say it is 'stupid' qualities that form these conditions.

Just a friendly nudge x

ADDorSomethingElse · 04/12/2022 00:01

I absolutely see what you mean! I will ask MN to edit the title- I think- what I'm trying to say is, not that I think people who have ADHD or similar are stupid, not at all, but that for me personally, I feel stupid in my day to day life with the things I do that I mentioned above... I'm clumsily explaining that I feel that way not that I think others are stupid if they are like me / have ADHD.

Oh gosh. I really don't want to offend anyone.

I've reported my post to get it changed.
And the fact that I've worded the title in such a way...hmm, maybe I've answered my own question!

A lot of your post resonates with me and I'm neurotypical. I do have Generalised Anxiety Disorder though which does sound similar to some of your issues.

Feetache · 04/12/2022 00:06

You and I seem to be the same lol. My DD has adhd and I now think I have too. Explains a lot

Feetache · 04/12/2022 00:08

My general knowledge is truely awful. If it's not interesting I don't remember it

quietnightmare · 04/12/2022 00:15

You are me 😁 pursue a diagnosis

Ihatethenewlook · 04/12/2022 00:21

Exactly what I was thinking. I do a lot of this but to me it’s pure anxiety.

ADDorSomethingElse · 04/12/2022 00:25

@ChristmasBloomingChristmas Thank you, I'll have a read up on that. Do you take any medication? Have you found anything helps with the anxiety?

@Feetache Haha! I'm never invited to quizz nights! Can I ask what your DD is like?

@quietnightmare I think I'm going to get a mix of responses here :)
How easy is it to get a diagnosis? Are you taking any medication?

@Ihatethenewlook I'm definitely an anxious person, especially since having children.

I started to read up on adhd in girls and she ticks all the boxes. She's very bright & talented but struggles socially. Disorganised. Looses everything. Thinks people hate her.

ChristmasBloomingChristmas · 04/12/2022 14:46

I take venaflaxine and have had various therapy. You might find CBT useful for your anxiety.

I don't find much on your post that suggests ADHD if I'm honest. Not minimising your symptoms but I see more in the anxiety. You can self refer to your local NHS wellbeing type service and they should be able to help.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 04/12/2022 15:18

I read somewhere recently that ADHD is frequently misdiagnosed in women as anxiety. The anxiety is there, but it’s a symptom of the stress caused by trying to keep all the balls in the air if your brain doesn’t naturally work that way.

ADDorSomethingElse · 04/12/2022 17:41

@Feetache I hope she comes to realise how awesome she is, I found school hard (I wasn't smart) but I also thought people hated me etc

@ChristmasBloomingChristmas Thanks, I'll look into that.

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool I've read that too, I'm not sure if 'how I am' matches up with it or not...

I’d say it looks a LOT like ADHD/ ADD.
I have been diagnosed recently. You could Look into getting diagnosed.

ADDorSomethingElse · 04/12/2022 19:20

@garlicandsapphires How long did the process take? How do you feel since you've been diagnosed?

OP posts:
Ballcactus · 04/12/2022 19:32

Quite possibly but it also sounds like you could do with some work on your self esteem- which is often the case with non diagnosed ND.
worth exploring if you’re wondering! And you’re not stupid or unintelligent

Thank you... I just feel it constantly! My daughter is going through assessment for SCD/Autism so it's just made me wonder about myself.

I think I will speak to my GP, but I'll have to put it on my list or it won't happen! 😂
