Red traffic light disaster

I’m usually a careful driver but mistakenly ran a red light today. I feel awful! I’m worried about the fact it happened and also about being prosecuted.
I was driving into London along a three carriageway main road and stopped in the middle lane at a junction when the red light showed. I couldn’t see the traffic light to the left as it was obscured by the bus. Looking across the junction there was a further set of traffic lights. I mistakenly thought they were secondary lights for my junction so when they turned green I moved off. I was horrified when traffic approached from the right and had several angry drivers honking at me! It turns out the lights I saw turning green ahead of me were actually for a pedestrian crossing on the other side of the junction. So I ran my red light completely by mistake but clearly I broke the law. I’m a bit shaken as I could easily have caused an accident and it’s not even like I wasn’t paying attention - I just got it wrong.
Has anyone else done something similar?

I doubt you'll hear anything about it at all. We've all made mistakes while driving. Try not to worry Flowers

Thanks for the replies offering to share your own traumas! I think it’s pretty normal to be worried when you’ve made a mistake that could have caused an accident. I’ll try to put it out of my mind and hope the next 2 weeks brings nothing in the post!

Accept any penalty with a good grace and tell the court it is your first offence. Courts are sympathetic.

It won't even get to a magistrate's court.

The most it will be is a fine and points, dealt with in the post. Possibly the "driver re-education course". Do that if it's offered. It's 3 hours of your life you won't get back, but you dodge the points.

It's great that you're so concerned, and I'm sure we're all glad that nothing bad happened.

Good drivers come from learning from experience, and sometimes close calls, you will be just that little bit more aware of the situation next time, and ultimately a better driver.
