I was discussing scallops with a friend who couldn't understand my dislike of seafood when a memory of being forced to eat one surfaced.

My 28-year relationship had ended, and I was asked on a date by a new man, we were spending time together getting to know each other, anyway we went on a romantic break, and I arrived by train before him as he had to run a youth club that night and would join me at about 9. So, I wandered around this amazing hotel alone and found myself in the cocktail bar watching a cocktail making demonstration. This was a very trendy place, (MyHotel, Brighton) and the toilets were unisex, when I went in this man made a joke to me about it, I went in and there was a very drunk lady in there who I helped out. It turns out she was his girlfriend, he looked familiar, and I couldn't work out why, but realising I was on my own they invited me to join then, we had a few drinks and then they invited me to join them for dinner, I checked with my date, but he was running late so agreed. We went to this amazing restaurant and when we went in, all the people rushed up to greet him, this was a little odd, I was striking up a great bond with his girlfriend and they were interested in my date and how we met (thats a story for another time).
Anyway, it turned out he was a Channel 4 TV presenter from how to make your first million, I don't watch the show, but he looked familiar, then comes the scallop part...he had paid for all this food and I didnt have the heart to say I find eating a scallop like a food challenge from I'm a celeb and ate it with a fake smile on my face! I was so proud of myself for enduring that challenge that most would consider a treat.

Anyway, we got back to the hotel and my date was still not there, so I mentioned to them we had the penthouse suite and there was a fairground antique horse in the bedroom, they wanted to see it, so I showed them around (apparently snoop dog had the same suite when he stayed - I got it for £99 from Secret escapes so a good deal). They came up and noticed the bath water in the bath, I said I couldn't work out how to let it out, so he put his hand in and let it out for me...his girlfriend giggled and said "I can't believe you have just put your hand in someone Elses dirty bath water"

Later my date arrived, and I introduced them, they told him off for leaving me waiting so long, his girlfriend gave me her number and said to keep in touch, muttered she didnt like my date and they left! My date is convinced they had planned to have an evening of swinging but the girl didnt fancy him!!

What are your stories of being in the company of someone you were expected to know but totally unaware. The bar tenders said to me "how do you know martin?" I said "I dont really", apparently as well as the show 'How to make your first million' he owned a lot of the nightclubs and bars in Brighton in the 80s (probably how he made his first million)

@Carouselfish Taylor’s memorial? If so I am very jealous.

I swam with the players from Leeds United every week for several months before I was told who they were.

I was once in a pub on holiday and recognised the lady behind the bar. I was convinced I didn’t know her personally but had seen her around the pubs in my home town. I almost went to say hello and have a chat but DH talked me out of it, saying he didn’t recognise her at all and I was mistaken. I finally worked out where I knew her from weeks later when watching repeats of One Born Every Minute! 🤦‍♀️

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/12/2022 01:45

Twice.

I was at a thing with one of the 90210 people and didn't realise until DH told me afterwards. Bastard.

A weird one was I was sort of friends with someone from one of the bands my exH knew. We always found each other backstage and chatted, lovely bloke and I really liked him. He was introduced as in X band. Turns out he was previously in famous Y band. I still think it's possible he liked hanging out with me because I was utterly oblivious.

SiobhanSharpe · 04/12/2022 02:28

Not me but DH. A few years ago we were flying to Italy on holiday and had treated ourselves to BA business class so were in the Club lounge at Heathrow T5.

We got drinks and snacks and sat opposite each other and a glamorous older couple sat next to DH. He was engrossed in his paper and barely glanced at his neighbour, who was in fact Dame Helen Mirren, looking completely fabulous, and her husband.
I was all agog but trying to be cool so didn't stare too much. She had really great hair, a lovely summer dress and the most gorgeous heeled sandals I've ever seen. I fell in love with them and wish I had asked her about them but I didn't like to intrude.
When we went to board the plane I said to DH 'Did you see who that was? Helen Mirren! ' Oh, he says. Nice shoes.
Some younger people we know were also on the plane and recognised her as they walked past on board, whispering to us 'Did you see Helen Mirren? Clock the rock!' (She was also wearing a spectacular diamond ring.)

In my last job I worked with dozens possibly hundreds of famous people.
They are just normal folks.Sone were lovely others not so nice.
The newbie wannabes can come across as as cocky but I didn't pander to their silly demands.

The King of Spain - King Felipe. It's still one of the most embarrassing moments of my life (and there were many 🤦‍♀️). I was at a work conference in Madrid that he and his wife attended and I had the opportunity to be speak to him. He was standing next to the President of Portugal who was also at the event. When it was my turn to meet him, I thought the President of Portugal was the King of Spain (he looked like Felipe's father Juan Carlos). So I addressed him as His Majesty and talked to him about how much I love Madrid 🙈The King anf the President were both too polite to correct me and said nothing, but Felipe's wife was starring daggers at me. 😬 I don't think I will ever get over the painful embarrassment of that moment.

XelaM · 04/12/2022 03:29

I realised my mistake after they both gave speeches at the event 20 mins later. I still can't believe I did that 😭

FancyFran · 04/12/2022 03:36

I chased Anne Robinson around a dress shop as I thought I had made her up (I was a make up artist at the time). I also sold perfume to Kiera Knightly in my specialist shop. I asked her if she would like a slightly damaged gift box as it was reduced! Staff doubled over laughing as I insisted we had met before.
In my old job I met loads of actors, singers etc. To me they never look the same.

EachandEveryone · 04/12/2022 03:47

Oh why won’t anyone say the name? It’s just weird. Who was the fit one night stand? Who came to the wedding etc etc? Why is it a secret on an anonymous forum?

stillvicarinatutu · 04/12/2022 03:53

Yeah . My ex locked one up for drunk and disorderly. Boy band .
His "don't you know who I am ?" Was quoted funny when the custody Sgt said "nope - and your detention is authorised , " 😂

QOD · 04/12/2022 04:16

I asked Ralf Little if he was on a table with anyone famous at a charity dinner 🤦🏼‍♀️
At Man U actually lol. Did also have a chat with Bobby Charlton much to security’s disgust, he was adorable
oh and was in the lift woth Amir Khan and his manager- who was starstruck by meeting Rooneys manager lol. I got Rooneys PA’s name & number and got a signed pendant/flag thing sent. Think they all spoke to me as I was a fat 40 odd year old and not flinging myself at them in a flirty way. Just a genuine oh wow hi! kinda way

Morestrangethings · 04/12/2022 04:31

I’m so old that I was invited to a lunch with John Travolta when we were both young. I’d had my first baby at the time, but it really wouldn’t have been an effort to go and was told to bring the Bub. But oh no, I thought he was very uncool so I declined. Then Saturday Night Fever came out not long afterwards…..

I was so much the uncool one, lol. And the thing is, I heard he turned to prove himself a really nice unassuming guy from the person who invited me.

Not quite the same as not knowing I was in the presence of a celebrity…..

I bet some really young person is going to wonder , ‘who’s John Travolta?’

DH and i were once in a tiny restaurant in Chinatown. Two men next to us were deep in conversation. One of them had a soup that lkooked really amazing and i couldn;t work out from the menu what it was so I asked him. He sighed and shook his head. I had no idea why. But I'd accidentally broken the code of not interrupting as suddenly all the waiters lined up and asked hte orange man sitting with him for his autograph. they left a few minutes later, dinner untouched. The orange man was Mel Gibson and i have no idea who Soup Man was. I felt guilty afterwards. they were just having dinner in peace. I'd have left them alone if I'd realised he was famous.

Nothing wrong with you asking about the soup. He was rude. I was staying in a hotel and the woman at the next table asked what my main course was and did I recommend it. It was Samantha Womack, Ronnie Mitchell from Eastenders, and was in the production of South Pacific a few years ago. I didn’t recognise her and just said what it was and yes delicious. She was pleasant and I doubt expected to be recognised.

I moved to a new area and was walking a friend’s dog for her, got chatting to a woman with a dog. Nice enough and met her out walking again a few times. No idea who she was until my NDN told me. She was a child actress and in many films in the 1960s and early 70s. She is the ‘voice’ of quite a few audio books now.

TheLadyOfHay · 04/12/2022 06:03

Was Roz Landor if anyone remembers her.

just remembered. Was at another hotel and enjoying myself in the spa area when another woman turned up. Very thin and with a face like a smacked arse at having to share the jacuzzi pool with me. Lots of glaring and pointed sighs went on which I ignored as it really was a very nice spa area. Was checking out later that day and went home and settled down to watch the BAFTAs on tv that evening. Sarah Jessica Parker is announced as going to present the next award, it was the thin miserable woman I had shared the jacuzzi with earlier.

iloveeverykindofcat · 04/12/2022 06:11

Kind of. My friend and I were surreptitiously looking at this bloke in a rather upmarket shop in Cardiff, debating whether or not he was James Dean Bradfield. In the end, she said,
"Excuse me, but are you James Dean Bradfield? We're big fans."
And he said "Yeah," like we were a couple of idiots and walked off.
So that was let down. Most musicians I've met have been lovely though!

sjxoxo · 04/12/2022 06:18

Yes, quite recently- musician Petit Biscuit! He had a mega dance hit ‘sunset lover’ at no.1 at the time, I’d heard the song but no idea who he was! It was through work (I meet people from all walks of life without knowing their background) and afterwards one of my colleagues was absolutely falling over herself with giddiness!!! X

Angela59 · 04/12/2022 06:37

My ex husband was serving time in a military prison for an inexcusable offence and my girlfriends invited out to cheer me up
We met one of the actors from the Professionals I had no idea who he was but an outrageous flirt!

Because the likelihood is that posters have told friends and family their story and the post will then be outing.

Eddie the Eagle in tkmaxx the other day. Completely star struck didn't even dare to say hi. To Eddie the Eagle. Was getting a bit excited about it all until my friend googled him and we realised it wasn't actually him. Well it was, but Eddie as he was in the 90s. People age who knew! Yes, I need to get out more. 🤦‍♀️

Haha! My mum went to a dance class a few years ago and danced with him. That's her claim to fame lol

TenoringBehind · 04/12/2022 07:00

The guy who played (maybe still does, I have no idea) Ricky in Eastenders. I was at an event in London and just chatting to him normally. Then I asked what he did for a living and he went all weird and stormed off in a huff. This was years ago (early 90s?). I didn’t watch it and had no idea.

scrivette · 04/12/2022 07:07

My Grandad used to say good morning to a man who walked past his house every morning. One day Top Of The Pops came on and Grandad said 'There is that young man I say good morning to' it was John Lennon!

amatsip · 04/12/2022 07:31

Radio Mercury (blast from the past) and you mentioned the school by Big Tesco!

Longsight2019 · 04/12/2022 07:36

Gordon Ramsay’s daughters were having dinner in one of his London restaurants when I was in there with my wife. They were certainly being very well looked after.

But if stories have been told about them then surely those stories will include the same details, and so the posts are outing anyway?

Possibly, I often change a few details on here though, nothing that embellishes the story or makes any difference iyswim, just less outing. I’m slightly paranoid about stuff like this though as have had a couple of bad online experiences.
