Am interested, but wondered if any Mumsnet parents had seen it and managed to watch without chewing through their fist, iyswim.
It looks beautifully lovely.
Am parent to DDs, may make a difference...

I watched it today and have no idea what it was about. It was like I only watched the middle of the film? There was only one glimpse of adult Sophie so not sur show it’s a film about reflection!

what do you mean by fist chewing though?

I absolutely loved it - saw it a couple of weeks ago and have been thinking about it ever since. I was furious with Calum at points, and devastated at other points. I loved that you only had the level of understanding Sophie had and nothing was really explained.

Late to the party but I think whether you thought it was boring or you experienced parental depression/ mental illness makes a huge difference.

Apparently the amazing child actor only got to read the parts of the script with her Dad so she was unaware of his despair.

I watched Aftersun in the cinema and loved it. I was thinking about bits of it for days after. I loved that you only understood that you were watching through Sophie's eyes right at the end.

I loved it. It really affected me. Still does if I am honest. Beautiful movie.

I loved it. I have thought about it regularly since I saw it in November. It is deeply affecting, perhaps more so as themes resonate with parts of my personal life.

PotatoFacedWombat · 13/03/2023 19:37

I have some experience of the themes in the film, but I thought it was dull and offered no real insight.

As someone with an alcoholic father who went on to commit suicide I totally related to his inability to parent consistently.

I also related to an 11 year old picking up that something was wrong but not being able to pin it down.

It's a great film but I do appreciate if you haven't experienced the behaviour you may find it a bit uneventful

AncientBallerina · 13/03/2023 19:53

I thought it was beautiful but a difficult watch at times. They were both great in it. I though it captured childhood memories and reflection on childhood events very well.
Made me want to cry not murder anyone or chew anything.

How can watching a heartbreaking film about a parent grappling with depression and suicidal thoughts make you want to commit murder op? That's an odd reaction. I can understand why some people might find it a difficult film to watch, but you can always switch off.
