When joining the motorway....

Can anyone explain to me how a driver knows, when joining the motorway, whether or not the slip road will merge with the left lane or if it becomes a lane all of its own?

I got caught out recently on a busy motorway, moving across to the next lane and the slip road ended up being a lane in its own right. As a relatively new driver, it was stressful trying to move into an appropriate gap, and then i had to move back to the left lane so completely unnecessary stress. I've looked it up online and can't find anything. I know that sometimes there are merge signs but I don't live locally so can't go back to check that particular junction easily. Does the absence of a sign mean no need to merge?

It also makes me wonder if there is a way to know if the stretch of motorway you're joining is a smart motorway or not?

Please no negative critical answers, we all have to learn somehow, and I'm too embarrassed to ask anyone irl.

There are usually arrows pointing straight ahead when the lane is remaining a lane rather than a slip road.

There's a sign with a diagram as you approach the slip road

You can usually see ahead if the slip road runs out or turns into a lane. I’d say 95% of the time it’s just a slip road so I’d always drive with that in mind.

markings on the lanes will tell you as well as the signs

CrispsnDips · 02/12/2022 21:41

Yeah signs and markings 👍🏼

There are signs on the slip road. Encourage yourself to get more practice changing lanes if you find it stressful.

poorbuthappy · 02/12/2022 21:44

You are the left hand arrow on the sign The arrow will either show as joining the motorway and continuing into its own lane. Or with bend to the right and show as hitting the next lane and therefore having to merge.

When the slip road continues as a new lane it's called a lane gain merge. These are fairly unusual and I think have the sign attached. I would assume merging into the traffic in lane 1 unless something to indicate otherwise.

Be aware though, that the slip lane/left lane may merge a few hundred metres further along the motorway. So don't become complacent, as you may still have to merge albeit not right at the junction.
Eg when joining the M25 anti-clockwise from the eastbound M3.

Also a smart motorway should have a sign ". Variable speed limits" and "No hard shoulder", they don't actually say "Smart motorway"

Or come to the M60 at Bredbury where you join in the fast lane. Yay.

Some good answers above. It’s a bit shocking that new drivers are not being taught this tbh.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 02/12/2022 22:03

If there's a sign then it will tell you. If there's no sign assume it merges.

These are quite a helpful series of videos.

Also have a look at that slip road on google street maps and see if you can see the sign that you may have missed. If you are planning a journey then google maps from overhead and google street maps where you can drop yourself onto the road showing you which lane you need to be in is helpful. I am a confident driver but still do this if I am going somewhere new. I have been driving for 25 years.

There are also some slip roads going onto a motorway that then become a left hand lane and the off slip for the next junction meaning as you are trying to move right to stay on the motorway you have just joined, other traffic is trying to move left to get off. Hence why it is good to look on maps before you go if you can.

If you need any refresher stuff there are absolutely loads of videos on YouTube from driving instructors showing you how to do stuff.
