If your child had Clarithromycin

How did you mask the taste, and did they get side effects?

It smelt fine so I just gave it to DS and I think he's traumatised! I didn't realise it had an awful aftertaste oops!

Also I'm pretty sure when I took them they made me incredibly ill, and a quick Google seems to confirm I'm not the only ones, though I'm only finding threads about adults.

Did your DC have bad side effects, or does the lower dosage mean DS might be OK? Poor mite has had enough to deal with as it is! Or should I be giving him probiotics?

I think we spent a total of 20 secs with the GP and all the questions are coming to me now...

Sorry OP, my little boy was ill on it and won't be taking it again. It took a couple of days but he just vomited constantly. Was grim.

HouseInThePrairie · 02/12/2022 19:04

Sorry to hear @babysharksb1tch , how old was your little boy? Did they switch him to something else when he got so ill?

I mixed it in mesquite chocolate milk - not ideal but the only way I could get him to take it. After the course finished he wanted to know where his chocolate milk was

That should have said nesquick

There are other options if clarithromycin is making him sick but it’s a really badass antibiotic, particularly great at chest infections. The taste is a horrible metallic thing, did you ever get a metallic taste in pregnancy? It’s like that but 10 times worse! I found lots of ice Lollys helped make it go away

ChicCroissant · 02/12/2022 19:07

Chocolate buttons straight away afterwards - DD had it a few times for ear infections, it does taste absolutely hideous!

babysharksb1tch · 02/12/2022 19:19

He was 3. Had it for a recurrent ear infection. He was swapped back to amoxicillin I think.

HouseInThePrairie · 02/12/2022 19:58

Thank you, let's hope he manages through the weekend as I can't imagine we'll be able to get a different one until Monday.

Funnily enough I Don't remember it tasting vile when I took it, but I remember the stomach cramps and vomiting!

It's only 2.5 mls at a time so hopefully I can hide it in his food tomorrow and he won't notice it as he can be pretty stubborn.

He has a throat infection and has had a fever for 5 days now so hoping this will help him get better finally .

My daughter had it for a chest infection and she vomited so much on it we got sent to A&E and they gave her amoxicillin instead. Good luck.

caffelattetogo · 02/12/2022 20:01

The taste is dreadful. We really struggled to mask it. Nothing hides that bitter aftertaste.

HouseInThePrairie · 02/12/2022 20:03

Urgh @LaughingLemur sounds horrendous. I guess only time will tell, I'll expect another crappy week ;(

I hope you can manage and that he gets better soon. I've had Clarithromycin and it's a great antibiotic.

dammiejodger · 02/12/2022 20:12

My daughter is currently on it. She finishes the course on Monday. She's got an awful chest infection and only really started to improve the last day or so. She's not fond of the taste but she's a trooper and just swallows it and then does a shudder. She's 2.

She's had amoxicillin in the past and god,
It gave her horrendous diarrhoea and thrush. Her poor bits were so swollen she was beside herself every nappy change.

Addicted2Sugar · 02/12/2022 20:23

It is one of the vilest tastes known to mankind. If you have never had the misfortune to get a bit on your hand and then into your mouth the after taste from the one drop lasts for hours.
My eldest used to have banana milk and a ginger nut biscuit to mask the taste.
My youngest puked and refused to take it again but is able to ake penicillin unlike the older one.

HouseInThePrairie · 02/12/2022 20:27

@Addicted2Sugar Mine can have penicillin so I wonder why they prescribed this one, maybe it's more effective?

@dammiejodger your poor DD, it goes to show there is no way to predict how they'll react as my youngest DD has just finished a course of amoxicillin and has had no issues at all. She's then kindly passed on the lovely infection to her brother.

I had it as a child and it had a strong aftertaste of almond essence to me. Put me off Bakewell slices and marzipan in general forever!

I used to down it with my nose held and then knock back a big glass of milk after to clear the taste.

No side effects though thankfully and it cleared my pneumonia like nobody’s business.

RedLem0nade · 02/12/2022 20:37

It’s used particularly for the mycoplasma variant of pneumonia infection IIRC.

Brandymakesmerandy · 02/12/2022 20:45

My daughter has had it loads of times ( she's antibiotic resistant to most others) and she's been fine. She just has a drink of orange after to get rid of the taste.
