Looking for ideas for a friend who's starting chemo soon. She then has radiotherapy next. Anything useful or practical would be great. She has a port fitted. Thanks

Warm socks, silicone earplugs (if she is staying as inpatient), nice hand cream (nothing too strongly scented), boiled sweets, a book to read/kindle voucher. Genuine, specific offers to help
Eg. I can collect your kids from school and give them tea on tues/weds if you like
Im free to drop you to hospital on Saturday
I can drop off food for the family on Monday if that helps.
Instead of vague "let me know if you need a lift/any help"

Maybe a lightweight blanket/shawl for comfort too

A nice lip balm to go with the handcream maybe. Some bubble bath for a nice soak when she is home if she is able to.

When I had chemo my friend made me up a gorgeous basket of lovely items such as hand cream, lip balm, soft socks, a blanket, gentle hair care, books. It was such a thoughtful gift. If she's having radiotherapy and it's boobs, then I'd also recommend a big pump bottle of E45 and pure aloe Vera gel which really helps radio damaged skin.

Luxurious toiletries are a good idea but the port might mean she can't actually get in the bath so just check that. Maybe a body oil?

Thank you- yes @TheFormidableMrsC it's boobs so will get that too

When I was having treatment not needing to think about too much admin was a huge help - so meals for the kids etc. a care package would have been appreciated but wasted - I just wanted to be in bed when I didn’t have to be up and about for the kids. Nice smellies seemed irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

crumpet · 02/12/2022 18:24

The loveliest thing a friend did was to organise a lift rota to get me to and from hospital when I wasn’t able to drive.

Thank you, that's really kind. I'm fine as far as I know! 🤞🤞🤞. You can get the aloe Vera at Holland & Barrett. I hope she's ok bless her. It's a rotten journey, however, treatments are amazing these days and for that we must be thankful.
