Amazon courier dumping parcels in foyer of block of flats.

I live in a block of flats - there is an entrance foyer leading to the lifts and the stairs. It's a large block and people are coming and going all the time, not just residents but visitors, workmen, etc.

For the past few months the Amazon delivery person has been leaving parcels for the flats in the foyer - completely in the open, not hidden, for anyone to see (and potentially steal). I was expecting a delivery last week and when it didn't arrive (next day delivery) I checked my emails to find one from Amazon saying my parcel had been "left in letterbox". It hadn't! Just as I was about to get on to Amazon, there was a knock at my door and a very lovely fellow resident was there, with my parcel in her hand, saying it had been left downstairs in the foyer.

Yesterday I got home to find two parcels in the foyer, just dumped by the front door for flats in the building. I took them to the relevant flats and explained what had happened.

I have spoken to Amazon about this, but I get the feeling they're not particularly bothered. They say they will pass on my complaint to the relevant department but there is no number they can give me to call the courier myself.

Does anyone know what courier service Amazon uses or is it an internal one?

Amazon do have their own couriers but it can depend on whether your order is ‘fulfilled by Amazon’ or a 3rd party seller using it as a platform as they will have their own preferences for courier delivery or Royal Mail.

Thanks @LovedFedAndNoonesDead - I'm not sure about the other parcels that were left downstairs. I've contacted the housing association and asked if they can put up a notice of some kind to warm the couriers not to leave parcels in the entrance.

Are they able to get to all of the flats? There are some apartments near me that need a pass key. I know because a parcel was wrongly delivered to me and I couldn’t get it to the right one.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 02/12/2022 19:40

*warn, not warm, obviously!

All couriers do this. They don't do it all the time, depends on the person delivering.

AppleKatie · 02/12/2022 19:43

I don’t really get the issue.

worry about if you actually lose something.

And I bet If you did Amazon would replace.

Eastereggs1 · 02/12/2022 19:45

I live in a flat and find some couriers just do this. Most are ok but there is one DPD guy here who just leaves everything by the downstairs door.

They all have so many parcels to deliver now I don’t blame them tbh 😅

HotChoxs · 02/12/2022 19:46

It's clearly not an issue or they would have stopped the practice by now

Since Covid they've made a habit of leaving parcels outside my front door.

Danikm151 · 02/12/2022 19:49

how a courier will see it is going upstairs to the flat means less time to make a delivery. If they get paid per delivery then that’s what they care about.
it’s very frustrating

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 02/12/2022 20:36

One of my issues was that the courier clearly lied about delivering my parcel. The delivery email stated it was placed in my letterbox it wasn't. I can only imagine the courier lied about all the other parcels too. Luckily, a resident brought mine up, but for the people whose parcels possibly go missing, if the courier has stated that they were delivered, as with mine, there's always the possibility that Amazon would side with the courier when the missing parcel was reported.

They've been doing that for ages as well.

imaterribleterribleshithead · 02/12/2022 20:46

We had this when we lived in a similar place. In the end I had a £200 worth parcel stolen and Hermes aggressively told me on the phone when I rang them that they had judged it as a safe place so that was that, even though it was not my safe place for the exact reason that it was not a secure area. Luckily ASOS refunded me, no help from Hermes.

Can you put up a poster asking Amazon to deliver to actual front doors?

Email Amazon and do it every single time

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 02/12/2022 20:55

@imaterribleterribleshithead - hopefully the housing association with put up a notice of some kind now I've alerted them. They have previously put up a notice asking for mail not to be left there, and this is a similar issue.

Amazon leave parcels on doorsteps here, open to the street. The lobby seems a better option!

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 02/12/2022 20:59

@InSummertime - Unfortunately, there's no email address for amazon. I have called them about this, but as I say, they don't seem particularly interested, although they do say they'll raise it as a complain although they haven't confirmed this in an email to me. I'd love to put it in writing to them.

@gogohmm - yes, I guess compared to the street, it is! It's not a great area though and there are so many people coming and going. There are some dodgy residents and their dodgy mates...!

I live in a house with a short path (like 3 metres) to a street in East London. The Amazon guy either leaves stuff on my doorstep, sometimes with the doormat cunningly placed on top, or wedged in the letter box in the middle of the door, or leaning in the arch around the door. So far, amazingly, nothing has been nicked.

At least your stuff is left inside a building!

Changechangychange · 02/12/2022 21:11

We’ve been having the same issue - except our front door opens out directly onto a main road (terraced house), and they leave the parcels lying about on the pavement, or even in the gutter of the road (assume it had been kicked there by a passer by).

The couriers lie and say “handed to resident”. I phone up and complain to Amazon every single time, the customer service people I speak to clearly could not give a shit. Really puts me off using them when click and collect isn’t available.

Yabado · 02/12/2022 21:32

You often have the option for a different delivery address often a local shop , post office or Amazon locker
I often get mine sent to the local shop to collect as it easier than playing hunt the parcel 😂

You often do (and I definitely use that option when available), but some items won’t let you select that as an option. Presumably depends on the seller.

It's happened to many people. There's clearly not enough parcels being undelivered as a result of this for them to care.
