So - just got my gas bill for November…

October was really mild so my November bill is the first indication of heating costs. And it was higher than I thought - £147.

This is for two people in a small 3 bedroom terrace house. Daily showers and heating on for a few hours a day but much, much less than normal. It’s a period property but has had some upgrades such as new double glazed windows.

My electricity use is pretty low - £50 per month - but expect it will be higher going forward as will be using dehumidifier more to dry washing.

5 Nov to 4 Dec £184 for electric. We're on oil for heat/water. 200yr old 5 bed detached house with a 2 bed lodge in garden for inlaws so effectively 2 households. Our plugs are on timers, ceiling lights are motion sensored. Try and dry as much as possible on airer in living room where fire is on approx 16hrs a day.

Our gas was fine but our electricity is through the roof! I’ll be heading into the office more I think. Dread to think what the Xmas break will be like with all of us in the house more!

My November was 39.60 electricity and 33.47 for gas and I've only been home twice! I've been staying with my boyfriend and my heating timer has been set to only turn on if the heating drops below 15°c. I was shocked at how much it was when I've hardly been home

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/12/2022 21:10

Electric was 176 and gas 89 that's with the grant taken off!

Itsonlyagame · 08/12/2022 21:17

I've just moved to a 3 bed terrace (1980s in North Scotland so cold area) and based on my first few days my December gas bill is going to be around £150. That's cheaper than I expected as I've been wfh and I like the house warm. My son has 15-20 min shower every day. I have 5-10 min shower in the morning but also have a bath 3 to 4 times per week at night.

carefulcalculator · 08/12/2022 21:21

I am dreading it! I have a while longer to wait until this month's bill. I am not being as careful as maybe I should but I have decided to spend more on heating and do basically nothing out of the home. What a sad time Sad

We went on holiday for two weeks, switched off (not joking) 25 items that have permanent power... we're talking at least 6 Alexa devices, cat toilet, chargers, laptops, printer etc and onosred (EDF) bills before and after holiday... absolutely no difference. Something fishy!

£400 for us. Two bedroom semi.

Pelo2022 · 08/12/2022 21:41

How are they expecting people on min wage to afford this? Angry

whatsthestory123 · 08/12/2022 22:07

well if i carry on like this my dd is £145 then colp 67 but no way near going to cover it more like £300-350 + im £350 credit but that wont last long

im already fed up of trying to cut down and watching everything but at over £75 for six days i dont stand a chance and do have a little wriggle room i have no idea how not so lucky will balance things

onmywayamarillo · 08/12/2022 22:42

£167 😱😱 although we have a 38kw boiler that was set on 75° output

So turned that down!!!!

ChangingStates · 08/12/2022 22:54

My gas was £94 and electricity £77 for November. 3 bed mid terrace, just me & 2 kids. I already know the next bill will be way worse as we have all had covid so a week spent at home being ill with the heat on more than when at school / work, now this cold snap & Xmas hols coming up with 2 weeks of being home much of the time. Dreading the bill at the end of December.

AtomicBlondeRose · 09/12/2022 09:53

@C1N1C - I wouldn’t expect there to be much difference in a bill switching those things off even if there are 25 of them. They will each be using an absolutely negligible amount of electricity when not actually operating, even plugged in. The savings to be made by unplugging devices have been massively overstated in the media and mostly refer to very old appliances which did use electricity in standby mode. But an Alexa wouldn’t even use one unit of power in a whole year!

2 of us in a draughty, badly insulated 5 bed detached. I just don't get it, we have 2 log burners, using our own wood, how the hell have we used over £400 in a month!

Goodness! You should definitely query that. Were you in debit before that? Ours was over £800 overpaid, in March and I decided to leave it, as there was news about rising bills. We have a wood burner, which really helps reduce gas usage.

I sent in a reading at the end of October and it's gone down from £150 to £73.

We have a late Victorian terrace, 3 floors and no cavity wall insulation. When we bought it, the details said it did have cavity wall insulation. In spring, we had the kitchen done and the builders made two holes in the wall, one high, one low down. Not a scrap of insulation!

There are the air bricks used when there's insulation and lots of drill marks, indicating it had been done. The builders told us that years ago, when the Government was doing free / subsidised cavity wall, some contractors would pretend to do the job and put nothing in. When the subsidies ended, they had loads of insulation, which they would then use for paying customers.
