Handles or knobs for interior doors?

We are getting panel doors in all rooms as part of our Reno of a 1950s house. I need to choose handles apparently. Should I get handles or knobs?

Any recommendations of places to look, styles or actual products?

I'd look on Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. Handles4U has a huge selection of handles as does Ironmongery Direct - both online. Worth trawling eBay for reclaimed handles too.

There's a practical thing to consider here...
Do you have dogs who could open a door by pulling the handle?
Do you have elderly relatives who might struggle with a knob?
These two things would swing me...but then we have knobs on "normal" doors and handles on glazed ones. Xmas Smile

No dogs or elderly relatives who need to open doors. We arent really door shutters.

I have no idea about door handle style. I have never thought about it before!

Handles. You can open a door using your elbow then, which you can't with a knob. You'd be surprised how often you need to do this, with something in each hand.

We have beautiful black wooden beehive knobs. Which look beautiful but seem
to be impossible to install properly and they go a bit wobbly very quickly and have broken on more than one occasion, locking the person in the room.

MassiveSalad22 · 02/12/2022 07:46

Knobs!! We have handles and I’m always fucking catching my pockets on them, literally never known rage to descend that quickly 😂

This is true...I only ever "catch" on my scrolly handles.

@demotedreally
We had to replace the one for the Kitchen and the only one we could find that "matched" was from a company called Frelan Hardware.
It's the one door that gets absolutely hammered and the handle is like new.

ChristmasTidyings · 02/12/2022 07:54

I'd say handles so you can open them when you're carrying something.

yoyy · 02/12/2022 07:54

yep ripped pockets on handles & i think knobs are prettier.

DarkAndDusty · 02/12/2022 07:55

I'm not a fan of handles at all so would always choose knobs

HereComeTheGrannies · 02/12/2022 08:09

We have knobs.

Pros, good for keeping toddler out of rooms. Pretty and match the doors (handles wouldn’t suit). I don’t catch my pockets on them.

Cons, can’t open with hands full. Have broken several times! Hard for my parents/in-laws to open as they’re a bit stiff. I walk into them a lot with my shoulder (I’m short)

are you me? I have black wooden beehive knobs. They break all the time. Notably on one occasion when I was naked and then got locked out of my bedroom. I had to wear some of DS1s age seven clothing until DH got home!

knobs look better but I’d go for handles if making the decision again. Elderly PIL really struggle with our knobs.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2022 08:24

Handles, for easier opening. I don't catch on them very often as I'm short (it's drawer handles I can't be doing with catchy ends on) , don't think DH ever catches on them either so that aspect may only affect people of certain heights?

demotedreally · 02/12/2022 08:34

Interesting! We literally never shut any doors, except visitors using the loo.

Might go knobs...
Black?

How do you keep the heat in?

We went handles so can open with elbows, but smooth - no scrolly bits to catch on!

Handles or knobs for interior doors?
CoffeandTiaMaria · 02/12/2022 08:58

Handles definitely (after years of knobs that meant you caught your knuckles on the edge of the door frame every time you opened them 🤬)
I agree that it’s far easier to open with your hands full too.

TroysMammy · 02/12/2022 09:00

I'm forever catching clothes on handles. Knobs all the way.

paintitallover · 02/12/2022 09:24

I've had both. Knobs look better but I prefer handles, as they are easier to use.

Nepoyeah · 02/12/2022 09:38

I’m in exactly the same position with a twenties house, hang on and I’ll post my two I’m dithering over and you can give me your blunt opinion.

Also a pic of the Edwardian door (it’s an arts and crafts house with big Edwardian influence).

This is exactly what I suspect! I really want the beautiful shiny Bakelite knobs but the handles make more sense!

Handles for practicality. I'm forever opening doors with my elbow - knobs would be a total non starter for me.

We used to have knobs in our last house. I remember doing some paper mache in the living room (no idea why I wasn't doing it in the kitchen), the door got closed somehow, and I was stuck with my hands covered in wallpaper paste, nothing to wipe them on, and couldn't get out of my own living room (DH was out). I had the choice of waiting for my hands to dry so I could get a grip on the knob to twist it, or wiping my hands on my clothes to dry them. Clearly I made some bad decisions in my crafting choices, but I am always wary of knobs now!

Ciri · 02/12/2022 09:52

Always be wary of knobs

That is so funny, that is SO like something I would do!
