How do you know when to leave a job?

I'm in my first 'proper' job since leaving university, I've been there for just over a year. It's in marketing. I've been surprised at how much of a staff turnover there is, most people tend to stay 1-3 years and then leave. In the last month, in the team of 6 I work most closely with day-to-day, 4 have left or are leaving. I've had two line managers leave this year, and am on my third now. I really struggle with change, and feel really unsettled by it. It doesn't feel the same anymore, and I find myself wanting to leave too.

How do you know when it's time to leave, and how do you know what to look for in a new job? I'd stay in a similar role, but in a new company.

I leave when the work is no longer challenging and I'm not learning anything

I’d agree with the above. But I’d also leave if there’s no obvious progression in sight, or if I’m stuck in a cycle of training people in due to frequent turnover. That gets in the way of achieving a satisfying, demonstrable piece of work.

i’ve been working for 20 years now and have quite a senior role in my field. Looking back at my own choices, I wouldn’t have stayed as long as I did in some jobs, hoping I would be rewarded with promo.

If I could give any advice to people in early career, it would be to keep on your continuous professional development, take jobs which financially support formal training and don’t stay in the same role for more than 2 years until you really need to. It’s easier to move up in a brand new org than to get a promo. Keep up the momentum! Good luck :)

I leave when I've been offered a better role elsewhere. Usually around the 3 year mark ss that when I get bored.
