Anyone who’s had or does MRIs?

I have a head and whole spine MRI coming up and have questions.

I have a belly button piercing, do I need to remove it?
Will I be wearing a gown or my own clothes?

I have had a normal MRI and one with contrast on my knee - it was a while ago, but as far as I remember I had to remove all my piercings both times and was given a gown to wear.

Ducky88 · 01/12/2022 19:12

Yes will need to remove piercing. I’ve had gown and own clothes before. If you want to do own clothes you will need to remember for it to contain no metal- buttons/zips/bra underwire etc

I usually go in a cotton dress and take a pair of thick socks as feet can get really chilly.

endofthelinefinally · 01/12/2022 19:12

Yes. You must remove all metal and you will be given a gown.

You'll need to remove it and you will get a gown to wear ☺️

Dizzywizz · 01/12/2022 19:13

I’ve had many…if it’s a hospital one inside I was given a gown. For the mobile MRIs in the car park it’s just been in my own clothes.

justasking111 · 01/12/2022 19:13

I wore cotton teeshirt and leggings. No metal allowed.

vipersnest1 · 01/12/2022 19:13

Belly button piercing - put a retainer in as no metal is allowed.
I had cervical spine, sacrum and lumbar spine and just had to take my bra off (underwired). Because of the cervical spine one, I had a sort of cage put over my head. It doesn't touch you and the holes in it are around 10cm square so it's not too intrusive.

Thank you all, I think I’ll have to go to the shop and get it removed. It’s been there 30 years and I’ve never managed to get the bugger out 😂

Im 😳 at the thought of an MRI in a car park!

I have regular MRIs and now go dressed in leggings and a vest top/t-shirt so all I have to do is take off my bra, but they offer a gown if needed.

Wear warm socks, those rooms are always cold in my experience

DohaDragon · 01/12/2022 19:20

I have such frequent MRIs that I’ve changed my piercings to plastic bars now. I also have to visit the piercing shop anytime I need one removed/changed.

I had my MRI done in a car park (it's a mobile unit lol not like a burger van in a car park!) 😂

Wore my own clothes but had to remove jewellery and no underwires in the bra.
Good luck, hope it identifies your problem so it can be sorted out.

justasking111 · 01/12/2022 21:23

Had mine done in a car park. Big pantechnicon type thing . Was a wee bit chilly

ADHD123 · 01/12/2022 21:32

I’ve always had to remove all jewellery, wedding ring, earrings, belly button piercing. No metal is allowed.

I normally wear a vest top and sports bra with no underwire and leggings when I’ve been on a ward in hospital going for one I wear a gown

PeloFondo · 01/12/2022 21:40

I wear my own clothes - went in leggings, a top, wireless bra and took warm socks
They looked at me and went "not your first one is it?" Grin nope, I have a specific MRI outfit now

ofmybloodyself · 01/12/2022 21:44

I had one last week. Like PP, it was cold and I'd been warned to bring warm clothes/socks. They'll have gowns if you need to take anything with metal off.
Definitely need to lose the BB ring.

As an aside, I was super stressed about having to lie still for 45 mins but after 10 mins I fell fast asleep and had a lovely time!

TabbyM · 02/12/2022 12:44

Own clothes and had to trawl M&S to find a metal free bra - got a sleep bra which is quite handy. Jogging trousers and warm top if an outside/mobile one.

NormalNans · 03/12/2022 13:21

Thank you everyone, just had piercing removed and sports bra is in the wash as are thick socks so am ready to go. Thanks for all the advice, I fall asleep very easily so am anticipating a lovely nap.

I used to always wear my own clothes so long as they didn’t have metal on but last time I had one i had to change into scrubs cos of covid 🙄

WednesdaysChild11 · 03/12/2022 13:38

Had one just last week. I was wearing a midi dress which they said I could keep on but they will check and if not suitable you will change into a gown. I think you would have to remove it. They're no big deal. Just try to relax.

Me too! Elasticated trousers and everything.

endofthelinefinally · 03/12/2022 13:46

To be fair, they have always given me a blanket. I usually have IV contrast solution though and if I get cold my veins collapse.

NormalNans · 03/12/2022 20:07

@endofthelinefinally that sounds uncomfortable, mines just bog standard. I fell asleep in the eeg so anticipating that the MRI will have a similar impact

They’re quite noisy! I didn’t get headphones last time. Sometimes you get headphones and music, or just ear muffs.

Not in a scary way though. Just might be a bit distracting, depends how sensitive you are to noise. My dad used to fall asleep with the TV on really loud.

I had a dermal anchor (at the base of my spine) that I couldn't take out for my mri scan. They went ahead with it anyway, and the magnets must have sucked it out, cause a few days later my daughter asked me where my piercing was. I didn't feel anything at the time and hadn't noticed it missing at all.
I was gutted to be honest though, as had had it for 12years and It really felt like a part of me had gone missing.
