Can Norithisterone be prescribed by GPs?

Does anyone know? I was prescribed this last month to delay my period by my GP and my daughter was told today that GPS are not allowed to prescribe it. Can anyone clarify?

Maybe it depends on the reason for needing it. If its just to delay a period for holiday etc I can see why the NHS wouldn't provide it.

Under the current cost of living crisis they should not be forcing patients to pay for private prescriptions for things which are available with a NHS prescription.

I kind of agree but it's not a medical need so why should that be funded?

I was on it long term until I had my hysterectomy in June.

Always got loads per prescription and got the uvolan or northisterone and sometimes both dependent on supply.

My GP prescribed it initially and the gynae then said I'd have to take it until the surgery.

I'd been on it a year before I even saw the consultant!

If they aren't prescribing it now what are people who cannot be allowed to have a period for health reasons (in my case daily uncontrolled bleeding sue to adenomyosis) meant to do?

Northisterone was my last chance saloon after everything else failed.

I am a GP a couple of years ago we were stopped from prescribing it to delay periods for holidays etc some GPs still probably don’t know it’s not appropriate. Most admin teams will know not to give GP appt for this.

we signpost to one of our local pharmacists where people can buy it or online chemists.

we still prescribe norethisterone in some cases to regulate heavy dysfunctional bleeding or to stop bleeding if someone having a prolonged heavy period.
also one of the progesterone only pills is low dose norethisterone / some hrts have it.

hope that sort of clears it up

I have been on it for over ten years due to desperately needing an ablation but refused due to having several bowel ops and more to come.
I sometimes get questioned about it post surgery... they tend to stop it for a while due to blood clotting risk.
I have recently had trouble getting it from pharmacy and was given PROVERA instead.
It's been a god send. I honestly would not have been able to cope with flooding for weeks on end and Crohn's as well.
