When postmen strike, do they just stay at home nowadays?

I remember seeing picket lines in times gone by. My local posties are on strike now but there's no one around, just a note taped to the door with the list of industrial action dates.

Depends on the office... and the weather. Most offices will have at least a few who will go and stand outside, but it is really cold at this time of the year to be standing still!
My office had about a third of the staff at the gate this morning from about 7am (6 officially on the picket line, the rest just visiting keeping us in line with the law!), but by now they will just be too cold to stay there and will have gone home.
My feet are thawing out as I type!

My husband stands on the picket line along with the others.

Picket line at our local sorting office every day of the strike so far

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 02/12/2022 14:14

I’ve seen a handful of people at ours, not every day though.

More effective would be delivering vast amounts of junk mail Grin

I don't think you get 'brazier and donkey jacket' picket lines any more. I wish you did, they were a good symbolic gesture of protest.

There are a lot of rules to follow about picket lines. Our local sorting office had one and there has been a presence at the station on rail strike days. But I think one of the primary reasons for a picket line is to persuade colleagues to support / not cross it, so if it’s a small office and everyone is taking strike action then there’s no “need” as such.

Sorting office near us had one. Lots of honking drivers too!

ClaribelLowLieth · 02/12/2022 14:54

They're out near me too - and lots of support!

I drove past one yesterday. About 7 people outside with placards. Nice day yesterday, might get fewer if it is raining. I gave my postman a tip today as don't often see him. He thanked me and said they were chatting among themselves and thought people might not tip them this year with industrial action. I told him I am grateful he comes every day in rain, sun or snow. He always has a smile when I see him too.

I drive past the local delivery office on my way to work and there's been people there every day of the strikes, some days busier than others. I make sure to give them a good honk as I'm passing!

Zingy123 · 02/12/2022 16:53

There's postwomen too. Yes we are on the picket lines.

I don't think anyones giving up a days wage to watch football Smile

RoachPussy · 02/12/2022 17:19

About 50/50 my DH has stayed home and been on the picket line.

SkinnyFatte · 02/12/2022 17:27

DH was out picketing, but he's a local organiser.

The bus garage was striking the other day. They have music and a barbecue! 😂

It was only a partially flippant comment; you won't see 125,000 postal workers on the picket line cos the limit is 6 per entrance - so in reality I guess many will be watching the TV football, I would. Or Christmas shopping.
97% voted to strike, so I guess they did vote to give up some wages in a way 🤷

Solidarity guys ❤

My local sorting office has had a picket line on the last few strike days.
