Energy bills

Currently stunned by latest fuel bill statement. Paying almost £600 a month for gas and electricity. Just me and the DH at home as we are empty nesters. Admittedly we’re still living in our large family home but we’ve cut down on the central heating usage and bills still horrendous. Interested to know if anyone out there is paying more!

i don’t check monthly usage as it’s obviously going to be sky high this month.
My monthly DD is £300, that’s for a large 10 year old house with four adults, 2 of which WFH and 2 are retired. We have an electric car and I have my heating on all day at 18, 19 in the evening. For the last few days I’ve kept it on at 15 at night to otherwise it struggles to get up to 18 in the day. We have a lot of gadgets, I use the dishwasher twice a day, do about 10 loads of washing a week, maybe use the tumble dryer once a week for sheets.

10 loads of washing a week? Wtf

That seems very high for your usage, We live in a big 6 bed, hard to insulate sandstone house and our heating is on 24/7 at 21oC. Our bills are around £700 actual usage a month.

We (DH and I, and teen Ds when he's back from uni) live in a much smaller property than yours so not directly comparable. However it's a brand new build and our £150 a month dual fuel DD has left us in decent credit over the winter. We are not at all stingy with the heating <glares at DH> and run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer daily. DH is semi retired so in the house a lot of the time.

It's mind boggling after living in old cottages with poor insulation, old boilers and draughty windows. We have also replaced all our appliances within the last couple of years and paid out more for the most energy efficient models we could afford.

Ultimately I guess it comes down to the size of your house and the efficiency of your insulation and appliances. Unfortunately not a cheap fix though ☹️

I live in a 60sqm mid terrace top floor Victorian flat. Two people living here and often home during the day. Tumble dryer, dishwasher, microwave etc. I’m on the variable rate with Bulb so I pay what I use each month. January’s bill was £255 which was a bit of a shocker but not quite the apocalypse and also worth remember the £66 credit each month between Oct-March.

It's much worse than what you have mentioned. If the pandemic did not kill you, then the government is on a war path to kill off as many people as they possibly can through financial ruin. But the blame sits squarely on America if you want to know geopolitics. With American bases in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe after World War II, America now rules the world. Britain became free from debt to the US after the Second World War ended in 2006. Britain found herself still under the stranglehold of America. With the EU now and NATO being rejuvenated through Russian aggression via the five permanent members of the United Nations, the world is not a nice place, but perhaps it never was.

I suggest you change all your bulbs to LED; turn your boiler from automatic to manual so that when you need hot water, boost for 30 mins. Only warm up the water you need to boil in your Kettle. Use your washing machine during the night at a lower rate and 20 degrees at a spin cycle of 400; try to run the washing machine closer to 4:00 AM so that when you wake up, the clothes smell incredible. Charge your gadgets, phones, and watches at night and avoid charging during the day. Ensure all appliances are switched off from the sockets switch; do not run anything on standby. A device plugged into a socket that is not being used still uses five watts of energy, so imagine if you had many plugs still connected. When purchasing groceries, look at buying items that are on special price and buy for two grocery runs so you may benefit from the savings over a more extended period. Run the dishwasher at night if you have economy seven or are double-rated. Keep a close eye on your spending and budget yourself accordingly. If you are paying into charities, end them NOW! Consider rejoining them when you are more financially secure. Don't listen to their concerns; yours are more important right now. There will always be those who are well off and have so much to give, but that's not you right now.

If you're alone, go to your local library and ask for any meetings the local community holds to re-engage with others who are also having difficulty. Don't stay on your own for too long. If you find it difficult, visit your local church, and a good Samaritan will help you without cost. Be vigilant and thoughtful when dealing with your financial woes. The first pandemic was a virus. The second pandemic is the world we live in. After surviving, we now endure the financial reaping of our elected governments.

We live in a 30+ yr old large 4 bed detached and have never gone above about £240 for gas / elec per month , usage may have been higher but the dd have never been and we are in credit on both . We use the heating whenever , bath instead of showers , tumble dry all year and have fans going in several rooms all summer .

Our late queen knew about the plans that were being made; that's why she was so unhappy during the 2012 Olympics. She was leaving behind a legacy, knowing that her people would be living through the worst time, much worse than the Second World War, and she had a heavy heart today leaving that terrible time. The Americans have much to answer for and its crony organisation, the United Nations, where Russia and Britain are permanent planners. The world needs a new perspective, and it needs a new organisation that is not tethered to the old way of thinking. The powers that be are using technology against its citizens, and as we turn into a more Orwellian future, we are set on a path of struggle. If it wasn't for the sun rising in the early morning, we would have been truly lost. We need covenants that care about our individual needs, not a boom-and-bust system and preordained political parties to vote for. BOE, Prudential, interest rates, inflation rate, insurance, UK Insurance Ltd, taxes, police, or POLICY, divorce settlements, legal system, inheritance tax, mental health, you are left with nothing to pass on. It is like you were never here.
