Surgical wound - is it OK? Photos

Will be three weeks post joint fusion on Friday. Was put into a non-weight bearing boot last week.

Have documented the scars when I do my daily checks and shared them with my mum.

She's now said they look yellow and black and has worried me by becoming panicky.

The photos are magnified, in normal view the scar is unremarkable.

The purple is surgical pen which I haven't washed off yet as my surgeon told me not to submerge the wound and I am really squeamish (and I was supposed to go into a cast, so wouldn't have to look at the scars.

That looks dry and healthy to me the bruising could be coming out now (disclaimer not a medic)

This was it from a couple of days ago

Sponge down the wound with clean, warm water rather than submerge it. The black bits might just be dried blood and the other bits due to sweating under the cast. You'll have a better idea when it's cleaner.

That's healing very well. Nice and clean and dry. Ignore your mum x

Soontobe60 · 29/11/2022 20:30

Its dry, not red, not hot. The colour is from bruising.

Why do you need to share the daily pics with your mum? Is she a HCP?

I agree with sponging it over to remove the pen and some of the dried blood. It doesn't look infected, I can't see any pus/signs of infection etc. The only odd thing is it look like a suture dangling out! Have they removed all the others and just left that one dangling? 🤔

Notwavingbutdrowningalone · 29/11/2022 21:32

@MarmiteCoriander not a HCP, she just asked what it looked like, then I said it looked better and she said it was turning yellow.

The stitches are dissolvable, so I guess the suture that's hanging just hasn't dissolved yet.

I'd say that yellow is a healing bruise from the surgery not pus. As PP have said, it doesn't look red, swollen or weeping.

OrlandointheWilderness · 30/11/2022 18:49

Looks like it's healing well to me, I wouldn't be worried about it. Keep an eye on temp, any redness/swelling or tracking out from wound or general feelings of unwellness. Student nurse - def not qualified yet! 😂 obviously if you are worried see someone about it.

Purplepinkfairy · 19/10/2023 06:51

It's fine, give it a clean ,boil some water and let it cool back and use it with a clean cloth to clean.

Notwavingbutdrowningalone · 21/10/2023 00:02

@Purplepinkfairy thank you. It's nearly a year on now and totally healed. The bit that was raised has healed and is still proud and raised.
