Does anyone else find LinkedIn to be nauseating?

Yeah I know I can leave it but I do find it useful for job updates etc but the posts are vomit inducing.

All look at me I did something nice?

Oh look I helped someone, look at me... I'm
not posting this to get recognition for myself just to say you too can be nice... and get someone coffee which is a fantastic learning experience that I must share

Today there was one from some man posting about his daughter's troubles at school and how she was changing school and he would "always have her back" also included picture of said daughter in school uniform?? Lots of replies about what a great dad he is of course.

I mean WTF does the child's school experience have to do with a professional networking site. Plus how does she consent to that????

OP posts:

You sound nice.

Oh come on, there's so many self aggrandising cringey side hustley 'my neighbours gran once told me 17 years ago that I was average and now look at me you can do anything just follow your dream and overcome adversity ' type bollocks 😄Im with you OP I don't think much of it!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 29/11/2022 19:20

I set up my boutique professional services business last year and have got a ton of referrals work through it - I don't post any of that crap

Watchthesunrise · 29/11/2022 19:30

I've never had even a whisper of a job from LinkedIn. I therefore conclude that it's a massive waste of time.

Really? I get approached once a week or so - ? Seems to be a lot of vacancies in my field at the moment.

Watchthesunrise · 29/11/2022 19:32

I also got my current job by contacting my former boss through LinkedIn. Hi, I'm thinking of changing jobs, want to employ me type thing. So I conclude it's been very useful for me so far.

I don't post often, but I like and comment on a lot of things.

MsNightingale · 29/11/2022 22:39

I just use mine as an address book.

TomTraubertsBlues · 30/11/2022 05:17

I think it can be industry dependent. I certainly get job approaches on there.

Autumnisclose · 30/11/2022 06:39

It's all BS. I know a woman who had a high flying job for 14 months over 10 years ago. She hasn't worked since. Her Linked in profile reads like she is still in the job with lots of statements such as 'problem solver' on her profile. Hilarious. She's a SaHM not some hot shot.

If you're on Twitter, follow The State of LinkedIn.

You control your own feed depending on who you follow same as any other social media. I spend all day every day on there and don't see anything like you said. It's the only soc med I use.

have no idea how you could spend that long on linkedin and not see the posts the op describes. maybe you are one of the virtue signallers? :D

it is nauseating. it's not just linkedin though. the same stories happen on here that definitely didn't happen in real life. the women who post full length photos of themselves and talk about how some stranger said something which in no way was true are some of the worst. i also hate parents that post photo of their kids sharing the troubles the kid has had in order to make themselves look good.

BillLius · 29/11/2022 17:15

You sound nice.

and you sound like a dick for obviously not having a clue for what the op was talking about but still trying to get a dig in all the same with some overused mn phrase. well done. hope your millisecond of feeling clever was worth it.

BillLius · 30/11/2022 12:06

You sound nice.

mackthepony · 30/11/2022 12:06

It seems to have turned into Facebook

Flapjackquack · 30/11/2022 12:34

@BillLius - you appear to be stuck in a loop, do you need a restart?

FrownedUpon · 30/11/2022 12:44

Agree it’s nauseating. So many self congratulatory posts. I do get job offers on there though, so I stick it out.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 30/11/2022 13:16

I do not get it at all. If you have a job why go on there and pimp yourself out? Does it not show the job you are in that you are disloyal? And as for posting congratulatory messages to yourself.... what kind of attention seeking moron do you need to be for that? Why also would you want a world of total strangers to know everything about you like where you have studied, where you live and where you work? Nothing but a playground for affairs too in my opinion. Utter rot.

warofthemonstertrucks · 30/11/2022 16:07

It makes me cringe the most of all the social media sites. 'Look at our company doing this and being amazing and look at me 'driving' it all forward and changing the world' and it's about some sales figure target for something shite...I just can't stand the constant self aggrandisement and back slapping.

eurochick · 30/11/2022 19:32

I'm going to get some professional recognition next week - so I am limbering up to be "thrilled" and "delighted".
