Does anyone have one of those embossed rolling pins?

I am once again tempted to buy one of those embossed rolling pins for effortlessly beautiful cookies... I nearly get one every Xmas but am held back by the belief that bits of dough will get stuck in the cut out bits and be a nightmare to clean and not work well.

Does anyone have one and can tell me what they're really like?

I have one and it has not been particularly successful. I’ve tried various doughs. Some did get stuck. Some lost the pattern in the oven. I did get a gingerbread to work, but it didn’t taste great so I need to find a better tasting option.

Mainly it sits in the drawer, resting.

Been so tempted but never read a completely positive review so I've resisted. Apparently best to chill the cookies once embossed, before baking, and that takes away from the effortlessly beautiful appeal for me.

Posted too soon! I have an acrylic mini version with snowflakes more suited to fondant and clay, the shapes go out rather than in iyswim so less risk of bits sticking. Used it on withe air-dry clay to make ornaments and it came out quite well.

Thank you - I will continue to resist then

Never had a problem with it sticking. But I don't really make biscuits (after the first flurry of enthusiasm) so it just sits in the drawer. Not entirely sure why I bought it.

I’ve looked at those too.
Would it work with cling film between the pin and the dough?

DinosApple · 29/11/2022 07:08

Ah so I've only used one of those rolling pins for icing a cake - and yes for that it was great!

It definitely made my creation look much more sophisticated than it was. - A make up bag birthday cake for my then 6 year old who saw it in a book.
That one is just a hollow, plastic thing. I expect cookie ones to be more substantial.

I have a wooden Christmas 3D one from Pastrymade and it's excellent. I've had no problems with it sticking in the crevices. You don't have to press really hard to get a decent impression.

If you have an IKEA nearby, they do an embossing sleeve that fits over your rolling pin. It takes up less storage space when you don't use it!

I have one I bought from Wish years ago as an impulse purchase (so not a fortune) & I’m disenchanted after spending hours picking gingerbread dough out of approximately a billion reindeer legs lol.

I was caught up in last minute Black Friday madness and drawn in my an offer of free gifts if you bought 2 last night. So glad I didn't succumb. Will have to continue to make substandard biscuits this Xmas. I don't make them the rest of the year so it really would just be clutter most of the time for me - even if it did it stick. Which knowing my luck it would for me.

Mumsnet saves the day (or at least the limited space in my utensils drawers) 😁

I am exactly the same. Love the look of it but I don't really bake biscuits very often and I can't see it keeping the shape well after cooking.

I have read that dusting it with cornflour works better than using normal flour in case that helps anyone?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 29/11/2022 08:07

Oh my - 'by an offer' (2 - good god 😱), and 'if it didn't stick'

You can use various things around your house for indenting biscuits, like the bottom of a fancy glass, a colander, whisk, all sorts of things can be used to press on patterns. Nothing quite like a reindeer though!

GimmeBiscuits · 29/11/2022 08:25

I have a wooden one that I have used a few times. Works best on chilled biscuit dough. The pattern does bake out a little so may try rechilling before cooking next time.

I had one and it was rubbish 😭
