First ever salary review, how to approach?

Genuinely no clue. I know women tend to lose out in comparison to men who are happy to demand higher salaries.

I am 24, have been here 18 months and am currently on £24.5k. It’s journalism/politics industry if that matters. Living at home as I cannot afford London rents or get mortgage approval and would like a decent raise so I can change this. Is £28k a reasonable rise? I turned down a job offer of £27.5k when I accepted this role.

Would appreciate any tips/advice. Thanks!

Ask and be ready to justify ideally with research from what you can find elsewhere about market rate. You also need to demonstrate what you can do now that you couldn't before.

However, be aware that many work places will already know what the progression steps are for salary in the early years. Also listen properly to feedback you get, so if it is a no this year what do you need to do to get a big increase next year. That doesn't mean you have to stay if you can be paid more elsewhere but knowing what you are or are not adding to your work's profit line, work place culture and general value add is powerful.

That's a 14% increase which is quite a lot. Absolutely you should try, but make sure you have some solid, quantifiable reasons as to how you can justify it. So successes you've had, extra responsibility you've taken on, similar jobs in similar industries paying that sort of amount. Good luck!

Thanks both for your help. Had my salary review today and we agreed on £28k. Thanks again :)
