Had to call ambulance for my 4 month old. Hand hold

My 4 month old has had a cough for about 3 days now. Today it turned really nasty. I gave her some cough medicine as recommended by my pharmacist. As soon as I gave her the medicine, she came up in hives, her lips and face started to swell and she was struggling to breathe. I called the ambulance straight away. They got to me in 3 minutes. They injected her with adrenaline and we were blue lighted to the hospital. We are now in paediatric resuscitation unit.

My DH is in another country on a work trip and I cannot get hold of him. So it's just me and the baby. I feel so guilty. It's all my fault.

Here for a hand hold, don’t feel guilty it’s not your fault you weren’t to know! You were doing what you thought was best and what we all would do, hope baby’s ok, she’s in the best place!

Mosaic123 · 27/11/2022 19:09

Cough medicine recommended by a pharmacist, just unlucky not your fault at all.

Wonderful that the ambulance arrived so quickly.

PronounsBaby · 27/11/2022 19:10

It's not your fault. You did everything absolutely correctly. A trained professional gave you that medicine to give her.

You are in the right place.

This is unfortunately how some people find out about allergies.

I hope you can get hold of your dh soon. Do you have a friend you can ring to give you some support?

X

She's going to be looked after. You only have reason to feel guilty if you gave her something you knew she was allergic to! My little one is allergic to a chemical in one flavour of Calpol. It's not your fault OP! I can't believe they've made you leave her side though (assuming you're not with her now?)

PopcornAndWine · 27/11/2022 19:10

Oh the poor little thing. Not your fault of course, you were following advice from a professional. Hope she recovers quickly and you get hold of your DH soon x

Mamette · 27/11/2022 19:13

Everything is ok, you did the right things and your baby will be fine. No one could have anticipated this.

Such an awful shock for you. Hope you can get in touch with your DH soon 💐

AdoraBell · 27/11/2022 19:14

Absolutely not your fault. Hope you Manitoba contact your DH soon and your baby recovers well.

Nursemumma92 · 27/11/2022 19:15

You did nothing wrong, you weren't to know she was going to have an allergic reaction to the medication and neither did the pharmacist. Sounds terrifying though but sounds like you did exactly the right thing and she's in the right place now. Poor little mite, hope she recovers quick. Have you got any family/friends you could call to come and support you? X

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/11/2022 19:16

An allergy is nobody's fault.

Why would you assume she's not with her 4 month old baby?

This is absolutely not your fault, it's not even the pharmacist fault. It's just a very unfortunate accident/allergy. On the plus side the ambulance got there VERY quickly. And now you are 100% in the right place to get any help that your little one needs.

Severe allergies can be scary, my 18 yo son is allergic to all nuts and a fair few other things. It was terrifying at first when he was little but now he is vigilant and it doesn't really impact him.

I really hope your baby is ok and it was just a one off. It must have been really scary for you, especially being on your own.

This is so sensible.

it’s no one’s fault. Well done for acting quickly and calling an ambulance. You are an excellent mother x

ladydimitrescu · 27/11/2022 19:19

A horrible allergic reaction is absolutely no one's fault. Please don't beat yourself up, you did everything right x

ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen · 27/11/2022 19:19

You did everything right, 99.9% of children would have been fine. You had no way of knowing in advance that she would be allergic.

I'd send DH a one last text thats calmer explaining:
"DD was unwell so I gave her some cough medicine. She was allergic to it and went into anaphylaxis so I called an ambulance. They came really quick and we are now at the hospital resuscitation unit. (If she is now stable add that). I'll update you when I can"

DuchessofSandwich · 27/11/2022 19:30

It sounds like an allergic reaction. That would have happened sooner or later anyway. Best that it happened now, with you present to act so quickly. Your child is now where they can treat them and all will be fine. Do push for a bloodtest to see if there is a chance for more allergies.

Always4Brenner · 27/11/2022 19:31

Hugs handhold don’t you dare feel guilty you’ve done nothing wrong.

Crabwoman · 27/11/2022 19:37

You gave her a bog standard medication as recommended by a health professional. This is 100% not your fault and you have absolutely no need to feel guilty.

Allergic reactions are indiscriminate and random. My daughter had a terrible reaction the first time she tried eggs, it is very, very scary but just one of those things

I hope she feels better soon.

dcadmamagain · 27/11/2022 19:39

Sounds to me like you are a wonderful caring mum doing her best to make her child feel better who then reacted calmly and immediately to an emergency!

chosenone · 27/11/2022 19:43

Hand hold. How scary for you with DH away. You’ll be feeling shocked now and it sounds so scary. Please don’t blame yourself ❤️

NatriumChloride · 27/11/2022 19:44

Giving you a massive handhold and thinking of you and your baby.

This is NOT your fault. It’s no one’s fault. You sound like an excellent mother in making the decision to call the emergency services so quickly.

we’re all here for you.

Whatnextarghhhhhh · 27/11/2022 19:44

Bloody hell woman you deserve a medal for reacting so quickly! Give yourself a break!

tirednewmumm · 27/11/2022 19:45

Oh lovey you did absolutely everything right and she's safe now with the experts. Flowers

Gwdihooooo · 27/11/2022 19:46

Hope all is okay x

Mariposista · 27/11/2022 19:48

All your fault? Come on OP, you were doing your very best for your kid, trying to make her feel better. You didn't know she would react like that or you wouldn't have given the medicine. No doctor is now writing on her chart 'evil mother who gave her poison', they're just not. Be strong, your daughter needs her mum.

Velvian · 27/11/2022 20:22

💐💐For you @firsttimemum987 . Hope your DD is OK. Absolutely not your fault.
